Ontario is investing nearly $38 million to develop Destination Wasaga, aiming to boost tourism and economic growth in Wasaga Beach. The investment includes $25 million for redeveloping Nancy Island Historic Site, nearly $11 million for reconstructing Wasaga Beach Area roadways, and $2 million for tourism planning in the downtown area. This initiative is part of the 2025 Ontario Budget and aims to preserve local heritage and create jobs.
The funds will support the restoration and preservation of Nancy Island Historic Site, which played a key role in the War of 1812. Administrative responsibility for the site will be transferred from the Ministry of the Environment, Conservation and Parks to the Ministry of Tourism, Culture and Gaming. Additionally, a portion of the provincially owned beachfront in Wasaga Beach Provincial Park will be transferred to the town, provided it remains public.
The Destination Wasaga project is intended to transform Wasaga Beach into a premier, world-class tourist destination. It will draw more visitors to local attractions, restaurants, accommodations, and businesses. The investment also supports the ongoing plan to protect Ontario’s economy and workers in the tourism sector, while preserving Canadian culture and history. |
