Wasaga Beach Residents Express Optimism and Caution on Redevelopment Plans
A community-wide survey finds Wasaga Beach residents broadly satisfied with progress on municipal beach management, redevelopment projects, and provincial land transfers.
Across all ten survey questions, public sentiment is moderately positive, with about two-thirds of comments supportive or neutral. Respondents share optimism about renewed investment but emphasize the need for balance, transparency, and environmental protection.

General Comments
There are many good things happening.
If you want this town to be a four-season destination, you're doing what needs to be done. Just don't forget us, the residents. A survey about that stuff would be nice, too.
You need to hire lifeguards and staff to clean up the garbage left on the beach by tourists.
I am thrilled with the proposed changes and the collaborative approach being taken in decision making.
Contractors @ the beach are very professional & whatever goes up should be good quality...Ont. government has mandated public access to beach one but not the parking... that is how the new owners of the town homes will deal with the 'riff-raft' of weekenders...ditto for the Hotel...only guests will get anywhere near their complex.. beach management was much improved this year because of the daily grooming & much improved garbage pick up...signage & marketing were a disaster...town was super slow to get their message out to the public & nobody had a clue where the too few access points to the beach 1 were...likewise signage for the food trucks was at 'eye level' when they should have been towering 30 feet in the air so they could be seen from any point of that large parking area...koodos for the new modern 'out houses' but too few of them...note: on special events weekends(almost every weekend) the vendors are taking up too much available parking...Suggestion: all current councillors should get out of their "chambers" & spend a bit of their time actually on the beach..department heads associated with decision making should join them... too many obvious issues are being missed by part time staff.
I am opposed to transfer of provincial park designation to local/municipal control.
Very exciting!!!
I am excited about the future of Wasaga. It's taken way to log to get to where we are today in the development of this great destination. I've been coming to Wasaga since I was 6 years old and have have fond memories of vacationing in this paradise. Now I live here and I am hopeful that the Town can realize it's full potential. Keep things moving, in fact move faster, time is a-wasting!
I am extremely pleased with the direction we are moving as a community. The completion of the TPAL and the work on the first high school along with the reconstruction and upgrading of the beach front have created a sense pride and enthusiasm unseen here for generations.
Although the Town has made great Strides forward, there are a number of historical issues pending resolution. The new administration was tasked with investigating the destruction of Town property when files were shredded, when land was bought at an inflated cost and many other dubious practices, too numerous to mention.
Hello. I am happy to see a rejuvenation of Beach One. I need to know for certain that we will always have access to th Beach in its entirety and that sections will not be cut off to residents.
Overall, I think the Council is doing a great job. Their priorities are the right ones for the town, their communication is clear and consistent and their progress tracking is onboard point. In addition to the Council's progress, I would like to acknowledge the hard work of the town staff who are moving the needle forward on behalf of Council.
To the best of my knowledge, this is the best council we have ever had. All priorities seem to be on track to make this an all-year destination while also caring for the permanent residents
What a mess!!!
I believe it is about time that this change was made. When I moved to Wasaga , I was astonished that the Beach was in disrepair. Vacationing in Virginia Beach shows what a beach should contain. Hopefully I am still around to see the complete change of Wasaga Beach.
Overall I approve. Parking at the arena is sometimes an issue & wondering if it was necessarily a need at this time of yr with hockey & events. Spring would have been better?
Overall I believe that Wasaga Beach is headed in the right direction. The only thing I am concerned about is parking at the beach for residents and road widening/improvement to keep up with the development. I was disappointed to see that they had to dig up part of the new arena parking for the building re: school. I believe parking will be an issue going into the winter season.
With no access or no info on how to access where we are with the beachfront, next phase, timeline (on-time or behind), we once again are left in the dark. Also, having had a 30%+ increase in taxes over the past 4 years while the council gives themselves huge salary increases is pathetic.
Everything is on the right track and progressing well
There is a contrast to the town’s plans to “develop” lands in Allenwood Beach and the beach areas in wasaga, and the notion of preserving sensitive lands associated with those areas. From what has been released and from whst is currently being built, the town is simply jamming as much commercial and residential buildings into beach from t space as it can; that’s the plan - and the environment doesn’t benefit from this at all. It’s ironic and frankly frustrating to see this, when town and provincial officials I spoke to over the past seven years used to say “there is a 99.99999 per cent chance that these provincial lands will not be developed .” (Due to environmental sensibility standards.” Why would they say that, speaking in reference to the last 100 years, and then within the span of about a decade since the wasaga fire, suddenly espouse the need for economic and tourism projects in thise very lands they deemed untouchable ?
I think is moving too slowly
Hello, Overall I'm glad to see that there's some forward progress on developing the commercial district of Wasaga at the main drag. I think that restoring some of the old businesses would go a long way toward reclaiming the sense of nostalgia that many of us long for in that area. There was a time when you could stroll down the main street and shop in the little businesses for a bathing suit, or play a game of pinball, etc. We miss that a lot.
Like what I see so far on Beach 1 redevelopment Want Nancy island brought back to where it was 10 or so years ago with summer concerts and reenactments More retail and cultural development at west end Not in favor of suggestions by Destination Wasaga of ziplines and Six flag like attractions. I do not want to live in a Coney island atmosphere. Keep us Natural and environmentally friendly.
Finally a full vision to move Wasaga beach forward as a top notch place to visit
It is very refreshing to see the engagement and traction this counsel has accomplished. Wasaga Beach is overdue to take charge of it's destiny and all the projects that are in flight certainly is leading toward a bright future that Wasaga Beach will control. There is so much this area offers and revitalizing the main sections of Wasaga Beach will most certainly help bring in additional tourisms and revenue to a city that needs to diversify it's revenue source. This will greatly help the resident of Wasaga Beach. Simply Well Done and keep up the great work.
Wasaga Beach needs this facelift for sure, destination Wasaga great idea, I believe residents have been talking about this for years my concerns would be accessibility from the water and during winter months. Water accessibility connects many townships, cities such as Collingwood, Owen sound , midland and Penetanguishene who in-fact have water accessibility and restraunts. In my opinion a perfect location would be at the current boat launch behind Pizza Pizza. Winter accessibility is a conondrum snow mobile or walking/ biking trails through this area across bridges would create and issue but would create winter accessibility to restraunts and businesses. Well that my humble thoughts.
I moved to Wasaga Beach three years ago and I really enjoy the small town feeling and I hope that all this development that won’t change that. As I read more about the plans I am feeling increasingly confident that the town has its priorities aligned with mine. I keep hearing the term “world class” and hope that this does not interfere with “accessible and friendly “. Thank you to the town council for their dedication to this project.
I think it’s fantastic to see our little beach town moving forward as long as we don’t forget about the natural side of WB. It’s so important to keep green space for our future generations. I feel that companies building new subdivisions must have some beach elements along with outdoor areas and or walking trails to continue to connect our WB. Healthy lifestyles for families and seniors.
As a resident I use new wasaga in the summer and leave beach 1 & 2 to the visitors. I'm worried we'll lose the quiet atmosphere that is enjoyed by young families as well as all age groups who just want a day at the beach.
As a member of the WB community for 17 years and originally from Collingwood, I'm extremely happy to see ANY improvement with our town. What's happy is WONDERFUL! I am saddened to see comments from some of the previous council members/spouses that are negative to what is happening. Failure creates jealousy. Keep up the GREAT work
Positive change is a good thing. The skepticism of some is concerning but understandable. Important thing is you say what you do and do what you say. Once the Public has been told, it becomes factual. Changing this does upset many. Try to choose words carefully and stick facts not speculation.
Move faster!!
I believe that after a couple of years, allowing for construction and locations being populated by businesses moving in et al, this will be a huge improvement and make Beach 1 more attractive generally.
I think Wasaga Beach needs to clean up its act. We were supposed to make Wasaga beautiful again. We have the worst by-law ever. The laws are not kept. Examples: old trailors and boats everywhere. Temporary garages everywhere, some in awful disrepair and some properties having 2 or 3 on their property. Recyleing boxes on every corner promoting only real estate agents. Who owns them, who empties them and who decides what they promote. I asked former council about this…..no answer. The placement of these is awful, why would we need 4 on each corner- one on each side would be fine. We have a beatiful garden just past the oakview centre but smack dab right in front is this advertising bin. Wow does the town not see this. Again who decides where they go. Pretty fishy stuff here. By law needs to drive around and see all the junk on properties and get it cleaned up. There should be laws about fences on main streets. What can be built(if at all ) what materials can be used and how tall. Look around, old fences everywhere, built of junk. And lets talk about signs. Toooooo many signs. Look at Iron Skillet on Sunidale and Mosley, since when do we allow franchise advertising on buildings. Buildings have way to many sighs what does by- law do about it NOTHING. Tent cards on walkways and in front of businesses, messy looking and sometimes blocking people from walking. Plazas who do not keep their property clean and repaired, such as dollerama plaza, always garbage everywhere and dirty. What is done about it….NOTHING. signs hanging from street lamps, do we really need one on every pole. Looks junky and messy. All are different, whats the message here. Entry signage into Wasaga Beach…is this the best we can do, really SO SAD. I could go on but there are just to many things wrong with this town as far as beautification and cleanliness, town needs to get on this if you want it to be a real resort destination.
I’m all for it
There is no master plan but the townhouses at Beach One have already been built. Thousands of trees are being cut down but no trees are being planted on the boulevards. Streets in new or "newer" subdivisions look like highways combined with parking lots. Little River Crossing in Stonebridge by the Bay is a good example.
Totally disagree with the transfer of provincial parkland to the town. Am fearful that the beach will no longer be available for residents to use. Do not ruin our beautiful beach with development after development!
I thinks it’s time it’s cleaned up in Beach One.. It was dirty run down and disgusting. I agree with beach transfer. New wasaga allenwood will be better taking care of.
It's about time
Very exciting. Smart growth that benefits the community.
Poorly communicated. Prov Park transfer is a big no.
The tourist’s that come here come for the day and bring everything with them, they don’t spend. They want a beach and water. During the winter it is so cold there I can’t see it being a draw. Leave the beach alone, that is why people come and always have. I drove down there last week and that townhouse overshadows everything and blocks a big part of the beach and that is just the beginning. The town has already started and no matter what people say there is no turning back.
The mistakes being made by this council will cost tax payers millions to rectify in future years. A few examples include: Destroying and reducing the TPAL parking lot and gifting land to a school board for parking, approval of private townhomes at the beachfront (to be built by a campaign supporter), giving five year tax breaks and selling beachfront land at 15% of its value, creating corporations to manage events and beachfront development which has removed decision making from the public realm and eliminated council transparency and accountability, attempting to block beach access paths, and asking the province to download the provincial park lands without a referendum…. A town of 25,000 is not equipped to manage or finance the cost to manage provincial parks.
I think the changes with the beach front are a positive change. I think it will attract a lot more tourism Wasaga Beach.
I think things are moving too quickly. What's the hurry. Things should be thoroughly and thoughtfully planned and researched. Taking over the provincial park should not be a decision made lightly.
I am sad that the town will be overseeing some of the beach and also the Nancy Island - I dont think, in the long run, that the town will be able to maintain the land for nature and tourism in the way that it has been. It will become less accessible to locals and less natural.
I am disgusted. There have been many fewer tourists regardless of what council says. The roads were destroyed starting Canada day .. and except for a lot of fences nothing has really been accomplished. I have been there often between 9-5 pm and it is rare to see any workers around. The lack of easily available food places is a shame and the port a potties have become an embarrassment - they are filthy, smelly. WHY were the washrooms removed? The way tge work is going they would not have been in the way. It us easier to go to allenwood or collingwood for fun.
Concerned that beach front development will endanger the undisturbed "natural" beauty of the beach. Enhanced tourism is is acceptable if confined to a minimal "tourist" destination area that keeps a large part of the beach undisturbed and natural.
I am very pleased with what is happening at the beach. We have a real jewel but for too long it has been an embarrassment. I literally have been embarrassed to take friends & family to see the once renowned beach because of the neglect that has occurred. We have the opportunity to make Wasaga Beach a chosen destination for future generations. Let’s not let a few, and I do mean a few, naysayers stop us from moving forward.
I don’t like the secrecy, lack of openness and clarity of this current town council.
We need change. Good change. And the current council is doing it right.
Going in the right direction.
Looking fwd to plans being implemented!
So far I am exited about the development and protection of our Beach areas. I believe in good urban planning and a balance with ecology & public spaces which can complement one another. No matter what, increased human activity and density will impact sensitive ecology zones. I do worry that Wasaga may set a precedent for other provincial parks which I do not want. I have plenty to say about Building Destination Wasaga in this U Tube presentation which is not covered in this survey. https://www.youtube.com/watch?app=desktop&t=2s&v=h1WTPd1UFCw
Very concerned about how much our property taxes are Increasing, as I am on a fixed income I may have to sell.. I don’t think the town should be taking over the parks because I think they intend to develop and are only saying they are interested in the environment. To fool people A council member told me they will take the dunes out at Allenwood to create more parking. It was disgusting the way the dunes were abused this Summer because the town took the signs down. Too much development, not enough infrastructure to support it. Too much focus on events that must be losing money. No transparency. Still waiting to see video of meeting that was supposed to be posted. Very DUBIOUS about the honesty of this Council. Very disappointed with this Council
I am worried that our beautiful PUBLIC beach is going to be developed like the condos at New Wasaga
I think it’s fantastic that work has finally begun to clean up and renew our beach. It’s been an embarrassment and I can’t wait to see all the new developments.
too much focus on B1. north of mosley is under attack. the tax paying home owners north of mosley are tired of the disrespectful day trippers speeding up and down the roads, throwing their garbage and cigarette butts on our lawns. these roads that lead to the parks are not like the rest of town . force the daytrippers to park in the park......it turns the narrow no sidewalk streets into oneway streets. mosley should be 40kms per hour, north of mosley 30kms per hr. At B5 it is pathetic on a weekend how the garbage overflows. the animals then spread it out all over. the only parks people picking up the garbage are the summer students. the white pickup trucks just drive around !
I have kind of lost faith in this council for one reason only. In all this time we have heard nothing about what has been done, or will be done regarding the abuses of power performed by the former council.
We moved here 22 years ago & I still love it. I volunteer at both the Library & South Georgian Bay Community Health Center. I have well over 140 hours volunteered this year. A tax break for the good citizens who share kindness and create opportunities for seniors (women) to create community. I DO NOT feel that seniors in this town are afforded what they deserve. Should the majority of the age population not have the biggest slice to the budget? we are a. i ority in a town where are a majority! DO BETTER!
Redevelopment of beach one is needed. It would be nice if it could be state of the art. Environmentally friendly. Solar, or water turbines for power as an example. Designed to attract adults and families, less appealing to unsanctioned car rally’s and the rowdy crowds they attract.
It is a step in the right direction.
I am very happy that upgrades and new building will bring business and more tourism to Wasaga. I hope that the residents will still be able to have our free parking at beach 1 and 2- we need some perks????
We live in the east end ( near the new arena . Every time I took Main Street and Mosley to get to the west end I cringed when passing thru the main beach area It was an eyesore at best . Bravo to town council for wanting to improve the area
Yes, I have been upset ! Watching the destruction of the old Beach waterfront. However, what is happening now “ is Amazing ! As a Handicapped Senior, who cannot walk on the sandy beach , but sits in the car overlooking Beach 1, I dread the time when that Parking Lot will not exist ! Please provide this important service for the seniors of Wasaga.
Why is the Town taking away much needed beach parking at the main beach and building Townhouses? Where will we park when we want to visit the main beach after the townhomes and Hotel are built? Please leave the Blueberry Trails as they are for people to enjoy. Will our taxes be raised to take care of the beach areas that will be transferred to the Town? Will anyone even look at this survey and listen to the the residents' concerns?
I think the town is finally moving forward to proceed with the times
What's happening is a sin. There is no forward thinking. No concern for environment, residents, traffic, reserve funds, spending, etc. We have an old town in need of upgrades throughout and everything focused on what should be a natural beach not a congested tourist trap. The main focus of Wasaga Beach should be upgrading services and infrastructure for residents as the town expands, ensuring our water treatment is kept past the minimum standards and sufficient to supply the expected growth. As well, efforts to ensure the water at the beach is clean with proper monitering and open transparency with a goal of making it a blue flag beach. You can put all the Marriotts you want, if the water sucks to swim in, it won't matter. The decisions to spend 30 plus million on Beach Drive alone is rediculous. Congrats on this council making that beachfront an ugly crowded clutter space. Nothing desirable to go there for. Toronto and Mississauga have done a much better job with their waterfronts. Mississauga just made a 60 acre park. This is a joke. Those condos are an eyesore.
Wasaga Beach council is going the wrong way.
Not in favour of the transfer of Beach 1 and 2 to the Town.
I like the start of development. I would like to see better transparency on the projected costs - especially as it relates to the taxpayer.
Need more transparency as to financial expenses, implication on future taxes, etc.
Great
These changes are long overdue. Congratulations to this Council for an Action Oriented Agenda!
I fully support the all the towns plans. They are amazing. I makes me sad is all the miss-information and that is floating around the town.
I find the council is not focusing on the main priorities of maintaining and enhancing our infrastructure.
I am against the proposed changes to Beach 1 area that includes condominiums.
I see progress happening and I'm happy about it. Construction has began on the beach and I look forward to the outcome.
I think it is great. Will improve the look and class here and make it an international destination. We need to doze the shacks and trailer parks and invest in affordable housing that adds to the area. I hope I dont end up paying more in taxes and I hope real estate prices surge here
I am thrilled with this Council’s priorities and direction. Finally someone is doing something to revitalize this town! I live in Allenwood and the beach looks way better since the town has resumed maintenance. The previous councils did nothing but waste taxpayers’ money with nothing to show for it.
I'm loving the excitement and energy that we have in the air. There's hope and optimism as well as the sunshine in Wasaga Beach. Can't wait to see the results!
All good, so far! The things I could winge about are minor.
I think it is great we are finally moving forward and getting this done. Has to be done for us to be “destination Wasaga”.
I say No to the transfer of park land to the town. We the tax payers should not have to cover the costs associated with the deal.
Growth is good but it seems to be very rapid right now. Don't like the idea of losing protected beach space. Definitely don't want new builds along the beach fronts.
I feel what is happening to Wasaga Beach is awful. Many houses are being built with no grocery stores planned. As long as that CAO and mayor look good it seems that is all they care about. The beach is horrific, all the small businesses were destroyed. The fact that not enough thought was put into parking at the new arena and is now being redone is a complete waste of taxpayers money.
We need to improve it but I hate the townhouses. They are terrible to look at when driving through the beach area.
Glad that something is finally being do to improve things.
I think everything is just fantastic. I am just happy to see that progress is being made to get rid of the ugly, run down, tired, outdated beachfront and buildings. I can't wait for progress to give us a new, beautiful and usable town and beach front.
Happy to have a mayor and council with vision for making Wasaga a world class destination.
About time !! Let’s get on with it ……
I like the direction the Town is headed in. I am a little concerned about the amount of spending but if it all happens the way they say it will, I'm all for it.
With decades of promises that always failed. I commend this council for moving ahead with what they promised & getting it done.
The town’s plan represents a significant departure from the original Downtown Development Plan. Purchasing a portion of the Provincial Park for vague economic benefits is difficult to justify, especially since this decision has proceeded without any public consultation. The Province of Ontario has both the mandate and resources to invest in environmental protection, which is far more appropriate than shifting this responsibility to the town. If this transaction goes ahead, there is no guarantee the land will remain publicly owned—it could easily be sold to private interests. Ultimately, the costs of acquisition, development, and ongoing maintenance would fall squarely on Wasaga Beach ratepayers, with no clear benefit in return.
I am always happy when municipal development includes better roadways, signage, beach and habitat protection. I am not for further development of the public beaches themselves nor do I want to see appropriation of public parks or beaches sold to commercial interests. The beaches must always remain public, for the people. I'm also concerned about the impact on habitat species like the piping plovers and want the city to ensure that these habitats will continue to be well-maintained. Transfer of lands to the municipality from the province must meet the standards of care that currently exist. I would hope that the city also puts in place metrics that demonstrate to us that they are accountable and following through on the above issues.
Our Council and the Province are doing a great job to support the Destination Wasaga plans. I love the plans we've seen, and those to come.
Very pleased to see the beachfront changes. The old buildings were an eyesore and looked dangerous to go into. The proposed improvements should make the area more inviting to tourists and residents and hopefully boost the town’s economy.
I think the development of Beach 1&2 is long overdue and am happy it is finally progressing.
Anything will be an improvement over the decades of mis-management and lack of vision
As a WB resident we are stoked that finally we will begin to see what our true potential will be.
I think our beachfront and "downtown" are quite tired and sad looking. While people want to keep that "small town vibe" I don't think I would come here any longer as a tourist. The "main beach" has little amenities and most of those seem to have the same items that were there when I was coming 40 years ago. If we want to draw families to spend a day or two here, we need something more than just the beach - particularly on rainy or cold days. We need to have other things to do/draw people if we would truly be thought of as more than a summer beach visit. As a "local" I would love to have a "meeting/come together" area to perhaps have a coffee or meal (by the water). I'm less concerned about development at beach 1 as long as there continues to be easy access to the beach and a theme that supports tasteful beach town.
We need more entertainment for families to enjoy
Agree to revitalize the old commercial area of Main Beach with height restrictions of four stories and well built tasteful buildings. Don’t rush! Do NOT agree with developing AT ALL on beach One Point or any of the aforesaid mentioned beaches that are provincial parks because of environmentally sensitive dunes and wild life Do NOT agree with high rise condos and hotels on any other beach areas except for the current commercial area of beach One and those buildings should be no more than four stories Agree road at commercial beach drive be raised to avoid future flooding problems. All current beaches Woodland, Allanwood, New Wasaga if town owned have NO further condo or commercial development to retain the pristine beauty and have future protection of the dunes and wildlife. In other words, leave it alone. The potential pollution issues need to be considered also for the lake if buildings and infrastructure begins on these protected areas. The further removal of trees would be scandalous and create ground water issues. Unfortunately the whole point visioned here by council is making tax money. This council is in too much of a rush and hopefully will be voted out and the next group will look to the future of a total protection of these untouched beaches. Just keep them clean and safe for the public. No further commercial areas. Keep it where it is now on Main Beach. Development on Beach One point would be an environmental crime. Right now everyone on council should be considerate of Nature NOT money. Too much too soon already in the whole of Wasaga.
I support 4 pillars outline above. The town needs to be economically sound and that can only happen with this plan to take back lands that were taken in 1978.
I think it's finally happening...we have been here for 25 years...and have watched the proceedings over that time...such a waste of time and money. Can't wait to see the final results.
The water front on the north side of the river needs to low-rise business and housing. And any additional changes need a referendum vote.
Pleased something is finally being done at the main end and the Point. Would’ve been nice to have preserved The Dard though. Whether the development pleases everyone or not… it’s an improvement.
To spend millions on Nancy Island is just a total waste of taxpayer dollars. Monies that could be spent on so many other tourism endeavours. Build a pier, develop the waterfront similar to other communities ie Port credit waterfront, Burlington Spencer Park, Oakville Brontë harbour front, Collingwood waterfront to name a few. More outdoor seating/rest areas. Beautify the surrounding communities leading towards the beach to reflect a town that cares on appearance of neighbourhoods. Ie Stonebridge by the Bay which has seen town staff cut common street areas twice in the whole summer months and has neglected to even empty poop filled trash cans along trail pathways. A thriving community but lacking town management and upkeep! It’s not just the beaches we care about but the very community we live at each day! That community we drive or walk in and want to take pride in but look around and wonder where are the staff that are needed to maintain the community and beaches? Hire more crew to get these tasks done!! I want to see my tax dollars at work in a positive way to make me feel proud of where I live!
Infrastructure is a big problem
A step in the right direction. Yes, the Town could use a respectable beach front hotel with some new beach accessible, four season restaurants with PARKING, just for the use of current residents. And that alone is a satisfactory goal. It is 2025 after all. However, I disagree that the main goal needs to included attracting out-of-town people, from around the world. This just brings traffic congestion into a Town where local residents already have difficulty (in all four seasons) turning left on a Wednesday during commuting hours. New tourist revenues will simply be consumed to satisfy tourist needs and not necessarily the needs of local residents. I believe that expanding the casino or putting up speed cameras will generate more revenue for the Town to spend on local residents than extra tourism. And I am not a fan of either casinos or speed cameras. If the Town and the Province can tell me today that my taxes will be lower after all of this new development because of all of the new revenue then I will probably get excited. Otherwise, simply and quaint is perfect for me ....and probably some tourist who want to see the longest fresh water beach in the world, regardless of the amenities.
Good work so far. Keep the momentum going. Recognize that many tax payers are hurting financially so get creative with funding. Always present the “spending $$ to see returns $$$”. Protect taxpayers and town interests. Find a way to turn the media to the positive.
We are very pleased that finally Wasaga Beach is getting the changes needed to support this community and become a thriving year round destination.
I think the town needs development, particularly the beach area. But not into a shady commercial zone.
Overall, I'm very pleased and excited about the progress coming to Wasaga Beach. I think this council is maximizing the potential of Wasaga beach in the most fiscally responsible way possible. As long as no beaches become privatized, I will continue to be happy.
During the summer, there was a fence blocking entrance to parking lot. Too long to walk it to be able to enter parking lot!
Very happy to see the town council is doing things for the betterment of the community and not for personal enrichment. Feeli g of progress and not stench of corruption.
Too much spending with such little return. Beach drive millions for a hotel and some condos.
It is exciting and about time the beach was overhauled.
Not supportive of Beach 1 and 2 being transferred to the Town. That land should remain as park land.
I think the planned commercial development is good but the townhouses are a mistake. I anticipate they will be bought and the owners use them as Airbnb locations, so the town does not benefit.
I think wasaga is going in the right.plus never seen how we have come so fast thanks to our mayor and cuncil Press cancel What?
I am happy about all the is happening in Wasaga. Not only the parks land and beach redevelopment but the new schools, the theatre et al. The work on river road is a hugh improvement. I am concerned about the other infastructure around the new housing developments though. As well I hope there will still be free parking at the beach for residents when all the work is done.
This is a very meaningful development plan both for the short term and long term future for Wasaga Beach.
This is exactly what Mayor Smith promised, both in his election campaign, and consistently ever since. In fact, based on new information, this now exceeds all that was initially proposed.
Great !!
I believe the mayor and council are doing an excellent job in moving wasaga beach, finally, into the 21st century. It has been more than talk, which, unfortunately, that has been the case for too long. We can't stay stuck in the 1960's forever. Keep up the great work.
In general, I am happy about the progress, and plans. I would however like to see MORE of what is planned. Thank you,
We look positively upon the vision, direction and concrete planning council has embarked upon in leading Wasaga Beach forward.
I am happy to finally have a council who is moving Wasaga Beach forward. My hope is to have a community somewhat like Friday Harbour and Blue Mountain where we attract tourists and owners alike. It will be nice to have a walking destination to have a coffee or an ice cream or a nice dinner. We can also use a nice marina refresh. If future plans permit perhaps a nice break wall (like Ontario Place had) can be built and a marina can be built on the other side of the river adjacent to the main beach ((Provincial Beach Area One)
I am very concerned about traffic generated by any new development in Wasaga Beach, since the road network cant believe expanded without significant expropriation costs. I believe quality of life for current residents, and not increasing tax assessment, is the top priority.
I love how Wasaga Beach is improving the look of our town. I would love to see older buildings updated so our beautiful town doesn't look run down.
Our family, friends and neighbours are very pleased with the proactive approach the mayor and council have taken. Although it is a long road before we can see the benefits the town will gain from the development of our community. We feel positive that our leaders have our best interests in mind.
I agree with the plan in general as long as the beach is kept beach. I live on Allenwood and my family has been here for 76 years. I would hate to ever see anything built in front of us on the beach. On the other hand, this summer the town has taken care of this area far better than the Provincial Park ever did.
Overall I'm very pleased we have an Administration that's finally moving our Town forward after decades of virtually standing still with a sole focus on building houses. The redevelopment of Beach Drive is long overdue and hopefully the improvements will continue for Main Street too. The land transfer is a significant bonus for our Town to flourish even more and I'm happy to listen to the Mayor's comments to maintain and look after the sunset and the included Beach areas. Hopefully there will be some influence for the Ministry of Environment to mimic improvements for our neglected Beaches 3,4,5 & 6. Nancy Island funding is a massive statement of how neglect has been evident for many years.
All the town plans
Glad to see these community upgrades, modernization, expansions, beautification. Next, I would like to see some action on the "trailer parks" backing onto River Road, just west of Stonebridge Road. They are an eye sore. Some trailers are moldering, covered in moss and tree debris and look like if someone slammed a door they would collapse. Not what this town should be accepting as normal, given the positive advancements being made of late and planned for the future.
very big project wish them good luck is time for a change
Glad that finally moving on after years of dithering and getting no where.
I think you are ruining the beach you are making it a place where young families will not be able to attend
I support this initiative. It is long overdue. As planning begins I hope that planners will look at successful beach and tourist towns throughout Ontario (and Canada) for ideas that have been successful in those communities; Sauble, Grand Bend, Port Dover and many many more. Let's make Wasaga beautiful. Please however don't put anymore tax pressure on current residents. We are already drowning in the exorbitant increases placed on us in the last 3 years. Enough. Current residents are primarily retired, on fixed incomes and can't support double digit increases (that are compounded year over year) to support your grand plans.
GOOD WORK COUNCEL AND MAYOR.
Excited for the path moving forward for our Wasaga Beach. Congrats to our Town employees and Council moving in a positive direction!
I am extremely pleased in the direction that Wasaga Council is taking our community. The development of Beach 1 & 2 is so long overdue. Keep your foot on the gas and let's get this done sooner rather than later!
IT'S ABOUT TIME. WAY OVERDUE.
Way too much building going on. Too much and too fast.
Let's move forward with revitalization, its long awaited.
It’s all very exciting! When I arrived here 13 years ago I was disappointed in the state of the town.. so many old and properties and the lack of many services. Finally I see improvements happening! There is a new sense of pride in our town!
It must be a priority for the town to anchor protections for public ownership and access to the beach and environmental protections for dunes and shore birds
Great to see projects finally underway, growing pains are going to be felt but will be worth it as the Beach grows up!!
Whether you agree or not agree with council plans, at least progress is being made in the development of our special little community.
It’s fantastic. Keep moving forward
I applaud the foresight and planning that the Council and Province has put together to restore Wasaga Beach to a four season destination.
I’m thrilled to see things moving along.
get it done. The sooner the better.
This is the best thing to happen in Wasaga Beach, keep up they great work, this will make WASAGA BEACH the envy of Canada.
Very excited to see things finally moving forward with the main end development. Hoping there will be good stores and restaurants. Would love to see a venue in Wasaga that we can have concerts and attract big name artists. Would also love to see a great wolf lodge come to Wasaga. I personally think that would attract tourists year round. Would also love to see some exciting events brought back to town. Loved the snowmobile and wake board events. Very excited for all the new changes happening.
Wasaga Beach has lost it identity. It is moving on from what has been and will become just another city. No more a place to visit for a nice day or a few. Maybe a stop on the way to somewhere else but not the destination. Time to move.
Awesome!! Finally heading in the right direction!!
Finally something positive is happening at the beach.
I am pleased with the progress the town has achieved and/or in the process of achieving this far for the most part. The only concern I have is rezoning land from commercial to high density residential. I think it's counterproductive to the goal of increasing the commercial tax base.
They are on the right path, moving the town forward and providing a larger , more diverse tax base
Q: Allenwood Beach
Allenwood Beach has been owned by the Town since 2012 as confirmed by a court order earlier this year. The Town is currently providing maintenance for the Municipal Park and is generating revenue from parking fees. Are you satisfied with the town's management of Allenwood Beach?
Allenwood Beach
Don't know, haven't been there
Do not know, cannot comment.
not sure
I don't know
i do not use allenwood
I don't know. Never been there. But parking fees for non-residents is okay.
I've never been to observe it
We are not familiar with Allenwood Beach.
No interest
Glad we own it and we can use it
I do not feel that I am sufficiently aware of the issues to answer this question
do not visit that area
I don't have experience with Allenwood Beach so am unable to comment
Do not know
Don't know much about it, so no comment
Don't use this area very much so I have no background to compare comments
Not familiar with the status of allenwood beach. I'm at the west end.
I haven't lived here long enough to judge.
No development
No opinion
Not sure
Haven't been to this area. No comment.
Have never been to it.
have only driven and walked through. it looked cleaner than B5 [ ON parks controlled mess ]
Not familiar with that area
Don't know
Don't know
I am not familiar with the management of Allenwood Beach.
I never go there so No Comment.
N/A
No opinion
don't know enough
Have not seen a significant change.
I personally don't use allenwood beach much but the one time I went this summer it was beautiful.
Town has done a excellent job on Allenwood
Have not visited so cannot comment
..but would suggest a set-back from the Beach for taller structures.
I live off sunnydale rd and have never been to Allan wood beach
Hope to see increased parking revenue from this area while beach 1 & 2 are being developed.
It looks so much better with the right grooming now taking place. The resolution of the ownership issue earlier this year was a catalyst to the more recent land transfer opportunity.
Far better than we have had in years.
As a long as residents are able to park there with their municipal passes and use the beach
There has been a marked improvement in the condition of the beach but there is room for more improvement.
Will Allenwood Beach continue to be kept up like it is currently? What about access issues? Will there be any chance the Beach front will be sold to Hotel Developers etc. Again cost to the residents may be a future issue
Somewhat satisfied
Good, but do parking fees cover the costs of maintenance.
I am absolutely thrilled with the maintenance in Allenwood Beach this year! I would love to see a campaign discouraging people who smoke to use this beautiful beach as an ashtray
Only if it does not cause further tax increases
Don't know enough about how the town is managing Allenwood Beach.
The area deserves to be maintained for public use.
I haven't seen beach raking efforts as of yet as there seems to be still in a transitional phase.
Don't know much about that side of W.B.
The area is NOT welcoming to Wasaga residents.
Any chance Eastdale can be paved?
It's a beautiful beach and I hope it continues to be that way
Far better than what the Parks Dept. was providing … at least for now.
Leave it natural.
Looks fine. But do not develop further. Leave as is.
As a beachfront resident (EastdaleDrive) since the 1970s the town has done a much better job maintaining Allenwood Beach and improving public access to Allenwood beach than the province ever did. It is a welcome change and a big improvement. Over the years either by design or mismanagement the Province actually created conditions that discouraged people from enjoying Allenwood beach.
More waste bins need to be installed.
I don't go to Allenwood Beach.
Don't know anything about Allenwood Beach so no comment.
The key question remains: what do taxpayers actually gain by footing the bill for beach maintenance? Current parking revenue may not cover the full cost, and there is no assurance it will be sufficient in the future. Why should local residents assume this financial risk?
They have provided garbage/recycling bins to the east of Earl St entrance, which has made a vast improvement in the cleanliness of that section. I would like to see them provide bins to the west as well, right up to the creek.
The mechanical grooming/raking will destroy the beach and habitats that like it has done for the rest of the beach areas. Not mention what ot does to the esthetics with tractor tread marks, sand packing and compression and mixing detritus into the sand.
Leave it be
never been or used Allenwood Beach so cannot coment on this
Unless you live in Allenwood Beach then how would you know? Council doesn't tell us anything. Even when I write to council they don't answer my emails.
The town appears to try and make it look like they are doing something but from what I can see it is getting worse.
No idea
I dont frequent that beach other than a drive by once a season.
Oh my god, what a wonderful difference! Beach groomed, garbage collected more than regularly, reconsideration of the ridiculous posts and ropes… THANK YOU!!!!
Have not seen financials to support the benefits.
Yes it's amazing. The cleanup by the town from after the mess left by the province is spectacular. I actually visited the beach. Everyone is very happy with the change. In regards to the cost, apparently the parking fees more than cover the expense to the city. It will generate enough income to actually pay for improvements to the beach. Remember, there are staff with extensive experience managing shore line parks.
Pay more attention to restroom facilities, change facilities and small unobtrusive food outlets.
Don't know enough about it.
Roads need to be widened and improved for the safety of locals and visitors
Stop raking the beach
Not interested
Any revenue from parking is being sucked up by raking this beach and staff being paid to maintain it. Show the numbers, don't just say it.
Long overdue
Need the revenue for the maintenance.
It is very clean
it needs more services ie bathrooms . If you want tourists to come you need to provide thesej
We use this beach area most often and are glad to not have to purchase an annual Park Pass for parking. However, the washrooms need more frequent cleaning as do the garbage cans need emptying.
Disgusting that the town took the signs down , dogs loose on the beach and parking lot. People on the dunes. Drinking, smoking , no enforcement of rules. I was there several times Only saw staff once and they ignored what was going on Ropes up with no signs so people step over the ropes of course
Allow public access.
Not too familiar with the area so can't comment.
Never go there
We have lost tons of sand over the years making the beach muddy and less of a beach. I appreciate the removal of garbage and debris that goes on but there also needs to be replacement of the sand. I appreciate the washrooms and the signage.
At least they have real bathrooms.
The ropes off dunes are still in disrepair. No signage to educate the public. Do better!!!
The town appears to have Little or no respect for the fragile ecosystem and has demonstrated this with the raking of the beach which has destroyed a federally protected piping plover breeding ground.
Can't say because I don't know enough about the situation.
I can't give an honest comment because I have never been. That may change if our municipal parking passes can be used there.
I live on Mamie Ave and am very pleased with the maintenance of the area. I do however miss seeing and picking up interesting rocks as they get raked up by the new machinery. I hope that the machinery is only used in the summertime.
Why not easy access to sudden issues with maintenance ect through our township
Poor restroom facilities
See above
There were several years where the town was not aware of their ownership. That represents mismanagement.
Keep it clean in the fall, & spring, free of dead fish, birds, ducks & garbage always.
I have not been to this area for some time so I cannot comment on it.
Needs a commercial element like a dining/bar facility.
I'm not familiar with Allenwood beach. ????¸ Mable to comment.
Q: New Wasaga Beach
New Wasaga Beach is proposed for transfer to the Town and would operate as a Municipal Park in the same way that Allenwood Beach is presently operating. Are you satisfied with the proposed transfer?
New Wasaga Beach
If it ain't broke, don't try to fix it. This beach is my happy place, so if you take it over, I hope it will not change.
As per my commentts regarding Allenwood Beach.
DETAILS NEEDED...what do the beach lovers get ?
Bigger is better, the revenues garnered by the town through weekend tourists will help supplement our tax base, which should benefit the residents, in terms of enhanced infrastructure.
Keep it clean in the fall, & spring, free of dead fish, birds, ducks & garbage always.
Same arguments as above
if there is dissatisfaction with allenwood will new wasaga be better
Would be nice to have dogs allowed on the beach like they do on Tiny Township, same for Allenwood Beach
Makes total sense to have one group management this precious beaches.
Worried we may lose a popular quiet beach area.
As long a Townhouses etc are not developed on this land.....EVER, only then will support be unanimous.
I am not aware of details, though.
As above
Don’t know enough about Allenwood
Leave it alone. Leave it for generations to enjoy as a provincial park
Leave it unspoiled by developers.
Based on what I saw this Summer more disrespect coming for this beach under town watch. Don’t believe that parking revenue will cover costs of looking after the beach
As long as it stays as is, not developed with more CONDOS. It needs public washrooms installed.
Revenue for maintenance.
Some things just need to be left alone, free of any development like every other natural beach. How are taxpayers supposed to support all this spending?
The roads need to be widened and sidewalks added along the beach roads
Keep all as provincial parks.
Same
Again, the province has totally bungled the shore line file. Not just the current one, but going back at least 20 years. Putting this space it into the hands of the town will improve the space for all stakeholder's including the environment.
Residents cannot afford to support maintenance of areas.
No. I believe this mayor and council cannot be trusted.
I don't frequent this beach
Sounds good.
I do not support the transfer of lands.
As long as there is no further development - buildings/condos etc.
I don't understand why we want to take on the financial responsibility.
again LEAVE it alone.
No development
The key question remains: what do taxpayers actually gain by footing the bill for beach maintenance? Current parking revenue may not cover the full cost, and there is no assurance it will be sufficient in the future. Why should local residents assume this financial risk?
Again, I am concerned about the replacement of sand on the beach that has continually been removed from the debris removal process. I would not like anything to happen that would impact the current dunes that exist, nor would I want anymore development (e.g., condos) occurring. The new condos that are being built are ugly and do not fit within the 'beach feel' vibe.
Very concerned with the added costs to taxpayers for the upkeep and maintenance of all these new town owned beaches.
As long as the beach stays public and clean, no buildings allowed.
They should leave New Wasaga completely alone except for once a month raking. It is an environmental haven for plovers and eagles. No future condos should be allowed The current ones are an eyesore and look out of place. There should be NO DOGS allowed on any beaches. People do not always “ clean up”. Town is not monitoring motorized vehicles on these beaches especially in winter. ( four wheelers and trail bikes) This beach has not been raked in 15 years and is messy and unsafe in debris areas. A once a month gentle raking would keep away dangerous sticks and debris washed in from the lake.and river where it comes into this area of the bay.
It could only be an improvement over the arrogance of the supervisors at the Parks Department.
I don't know enough on this matter.
The area deserves to be maintained for public use.
It always comes back to expenses. What make the town better at maintaining a park than the province. Who has more money and experience at park care than a provincial government.
Somewhat satisfied
Again costs, maintenance & burden to taxpayers become an issue. Town cannot afford this & I do not trust their Transparency.
See comments re Allenwood
Again, don't know much about that area or how the residents there feel.
If it's to be left as is, why does it need to be transferred to the Town? I don't trust this.
As long as the residents will be able.to.park there with their municipal passes and use the beach
At long as there is room in the budget to provide the level of care that they have at Allenwood without more burden on taxpayers.
This is the more quieter part of our beaches and it can use some improved maintenance like Allenwood is now receiving.
worried about revenue and who pays if tourism fails
Great that this area is included. Increases public enjoyment and use.
I live off sunnydale rd so have never been to this beach
...but would suggest a set-back from the Beach for taller structures.
It means well thought out plans & to have control for future plan will be a big step forward for our town
Living at New Wasaga Beach , it has been an imberancing to bring people to our beach the way that the province has maintained the beach and enforced by-laws.
Very happy for our town. Thrilled the province is returning the lan
Q: Provincial Beach Area One
Provincial Beach Area One is mostly paved parking lots. A multi-disciplinary team of ecologists, designers, and planners is being formed to create a Waterfront Master Plan grounded in sustainability and public input. The Province has given the Town $2 million to fund the process. Do you support the idea of developing a four-season tourist attraction in Beach Area One?
Provincial Beach Area One
Only if the attraction was completely family oriented. No shops, hotels, AirBnB's, etc.
That is the best area to focus on for tourism.
This would be a great change and would make Wasaga Beach a year round destination!
Need more details on usage
Unbiased information has been lacking
Dining on the point would be outstanding, just saying!
The current park area, which has been referred to as “the point” has been under utilized for decades. If we are able to take control of it, it will expand our entertainment area in a very exciting way!
I don't like the fact there selling condos. For the elite . Hotels okay no need for condos
Outdoor Skating rknk & festival square with a fire pit on winter for outdoor events. Santa Clause parade along beach drive, then onto Dunkaron to tree lighting.
Tourism ? All the condos will be rented out to people who don’t live here, and care less about the concerns we raise here. And more on tourism: who is going to live in the town homes and condos if there’s a winter like the one we had in early 2025, when snow and winds piled snow 11 feet high on my residence. There’s a reality here that the town is flossing over with vain notions of development for the future …
where are these 4 season tourists going to park
"it is shameful what was done many years back. the area has been sitting mostly empty and is not only a sore eye but not respectful for the environment.
A carefully redesign of this precious land will go a long way for the environment and for the public.
"There would be some concerns in my opinion: parking specifically in the summer, boat docking accessibility not only for visitors but emergency services.
I still can’t fully visualize what this will look like and am hoping that there aren’t going to be big buildings obstructing the view. I like the little stores and the mini golf…they reflect the character and history of the area. If that is kept, then I support the plans.
Again as a resident I see the need for a year round plan as well as decent accommodations for visitors whether it's for hockey tournaments or beach goers.
People visit Great Wolf Lodge, so why can't we have a GREAT attraction too
Parking is always an issue in Beach 1. With more development and less parking, that wont improve. Change what is developed now but keep the existing dunes and naturalization.
This shows the spit highlighted, but is Beach 1 not more than this area? I would personally like to see the spit returned to a more natural state. I do not believe the "Four-season tourist attraction" is aimed at this section. The image is misleading, showing what may be a more sensitive area that what has traditionally been the more commercial area.
Long as its not condos
There seems to be a contradictions here "sustainability" and "developing a four season tourist attraction". The only way to improve the Point part of Beach One would be to reduce the parking lot areas and plant more trees.
"Two million doesn’t go very far.
I don’t support the idea of a four season tourist attraction. I don’t think it is what people want. Blue mountain took over 50 years to get where they are. I don’t think Wasaga can wait that long????
"Too little too late…. They’ve already already allowed town houses to be built ! Biggest mistake ever!
Sure doesn't look like mostly parking lot to me. Its a beautiful peninsula segregated from the commercial area. And the plovers!!!
Its not smart to build on that spit of land anyway, why not make it a real nature preserve, allow people to visit to see how it is when its natural and by charging a small fee, pay for the maintenance
I don't trust these "experts". It depends on who is paying off whom.
There is not much to do during fall to spring on Wasaga
Environmentalists must have a strong voice in any plans to develop area1. Very very concerned that developers greed will drown out the voices for natural sustainable eco friendly plans,
We need control over this property. I am appalled by the attitude of visitors that it okay to simply leave their garbage, plastic bottles, food wrappers, etc. lying on the sand & just walking away. Have those objecting been down to the beach at the end of any given summer day to see the mess that is left behind. We need to be able to try to not only have better management of the situation but also to change attitudes towards OUR beach.
Statements and plans are too vague now. Are the parking lots currently used to capacity? Where will those people go if the lots are redeveloped into something else or are you just driving away visitors?
The town has not taken into consideration what the tax payers want to see. They have proven that in the west end.
Don't know if the infrastructure of utilities can handle it.
This area should be our beacon for ecology & leave the other half of beach 1 & 2 as the populated happening place. I would like to see the under-utilized parking returned to dunes to further protected habitat. Human numbers calculated to reduction ecological impact. I think the tip of this peninsula should remain off limits to humans. Extend the board walk down the beach & circle round on to the river side for walking and fishing platforms would be ideal. No boat launch. Lights along the boardwalk reduced to knee height so that the skies returned to the stars & sunsets gazing.
They are just going to decide to build condos.
Like what? How can we support something without knowing what is planned?
remove the asphalt, total parkland. maybe build a parking garage or a shuttle service from farther back in town.
It is a out damn time something got done! Good job stepping up and putting us on the map! If we draw tourists, they pay, less tax on the residents!
Developing beach two would make more sense. East of beach one should be protected
"Do you really think that people will come here in the winter?
Please do not get rid of so much parking! Most residents need to drive to enjoy the beach!
"Go for it.
We need a four-season tourist attraction to help defray the cost from year-round residents
This is an oversized sandbar. The town should know better. Anyone who knows anything about the environment would not support this. Try again.
"This is one of the least utilized parks. it is a big parking lot that is seldom used to capacity on 8 weekends a year. it is an eyesore, a trip hazard keeping visitors away from a beautiful beach and dunes. The sooner work starts on this area, the better.
This park is an ideal location for a marina or water sport focus.
"I fully support the development of the beach as planned. This town is dying and desperately needs development. There is extensive homeless and people struggling financially. You only have to walk the trails around the beach and there you will find people living in the open. We need the jobs to save this town we love.
Keeping in mind this has a protected eco area. The area does not support a marina since there is so much silting. Speak with owners of local marinas re their continuing problems
Doug Ford has no money for education, health care and has already enacted legislation that bypasses environmental concerns. I believe this interest in Wasaga Beach is akin to his plan to open the Greenbelt and to build highway 413 through prime agricultural land. This is a beginning of destruction of the Wasaga Beach waterfront and properties. According to the Beach Booster article properties will be released to private ownership. Those paved parking lots supported a thriving tourist market already as well as community events. A four season destination will only happen with extensive modifications to the environment.
About time.
Develop the strip, maybe leave the parking down toward the point, but no development down there. And is the closed off part really necessary?
Yes we need this.
I don't believe a word from this Mayor or council. I don't trust any of them to get a good deal for the residents.
I don't believe this is the best way to utilize and protect the land environmentally.
No local hospital and doctors should be the priority
If it fits in with our natural environment, like cross country skiing, snowmobiling, snowshoeing, skating that would be okay. People come to Wasaga because it isn't too far from big cities to find nature.
leave the point area alone. Maybe some new tables, and fix up the shelters I would say have the province keep ownership and they could do the above.
Leave park 1 as is This council will try to make it into condo developments
I cannot stress how strongly I feel about this. Please get rid of the old and give us a beach front that can be visited year round. I am so happy to see that construction is going forward!! Thank you so much!!
Sure better than parking lots!
Haven’t seen any plans for this area .. can’t comment..
It’s not true that Beach Area One is “mostly parking lots”—satellite images show less than 40%. Without parking, how will people access this new so-called paradise? Spending $2M on a four-season attraction is unrealistic when the Town can’t even deliver on the Beachfront Development after 10 years of studies. A simple, cost-effective solution would be planting more trees in Area One.
I need more info on what the attraction would be. I do think the parking lots need to be fixed up which I assume will happen when the area is developed.
Development must not include The Point and efforts to continue rehabilitation of the dunes should happen east of Spruce st.
Along with summer recreation there are many winter sports activities and games and competitions that Wasaga can host to make this area a 4 season destination.
The shore lines of this area are constantly changing due to water movement. A nice restaurant with water view would be lovely. We aren’t capitalizing on the waterfront that people enjoy so much.
This particular area should NOT be touched by infrastructure. It's beauty is in itself and should be protected from any construction. The parking lots should be removed and perhaps a circular boardwalk could be the main attraction.
Yes! Besides bringing tourist dollars, as a local I would love to have access for myself and visiting guests to do other activities beside going to the beach.
I Support it but make it tasteful and culturally inviting like the commercial beach areas in Europe.
Not pleased with the condos being built presently.
Beach area one has been too long neglected by park and should be made destination again not eye sore like it is now.
The area needs to be operated as an overnight campground to earn an income for the town, similar to Turkey Point. Stays can only be for a max of 14 days. Services like sewage dumping are an extra cost for site pickup or free upon your exit from the park.
At least something is being done, stagnated too long. Mark Crowe and Stonebridge certainly get things done.
"I would like to see the parking lots gone.
Walking trails , birdwatching would be appreciated.
"I’m in favour of a better waterfront area. It’s long overdue
That’s great that the province gave 2 million how much is it actually going to cost the town?
I am interested to know what winter attractions will sustain profit margins for a Hotel for 6 months of the year. As long as it doesn't put my taxes up then I welcome the Marriot Hotel.
It’s long overdue. We still have to keep it beach appropriate without being tacky.
"That is sneaky wording.
I support making this area user friendly and moving parking lots to the mainland area. I would like to hear what “development “ means?
"I support making it anything but housing or a resort
Until we know more details about what it would be and look like it is hard to completely support. Change is good …..clean up the point, make it accessible for family picnics and fun.
but what is going to bring people up here in the middle of winter we do not have any winter sports here we do not have ski slops and people do not have to come up here to go skating
My concern is what will be the effect on traffic.
"It is so derelict looking now. It's not a place I want to spend any time, nor is it a place where I feel comfortable bringing my friends. It's embarrassing to live in a town that doesn't look after it's major tourist asset.
Wasaga beach currently is a very tough town to survive in as a small business owner. If we became a four season tourist, destination, businesses would have a much better chance of survival.
"Better a parking area for those that want to enjoy the beach than a tourist attraction for those who can afford it excluding others .
Strongly support
It’s a beautiful piece of property that should be made available and enjoyed by the public.
Two million will not go far especially with the Town’s past history & their non transparency in the current administration
Long overdue
We are cautiously optimistic about the master plan. We await the details.
I would love to see a nice Marina here. Perhaps we can attract day trippers from Midland and Collingwood, Thornbury area. It would be nice to own a nice condo at the beach and have access to a nice Marina to park a boat/jetski.
I think the objective should be to increase the quality of the offering but not the size of the crowds.
Absolutely, If we can be a four season destination that will greatly improve things for our local businesses and our community as a whole.
Less is more, using as much natural materials to build and encourage wild life to live amongst the additional structures can be a creative way to appease naturalists.
The beaches are a pretty hostile environment in the winter. It will be interesting to see how they plan to attract people during that time.
It was there before and taken away by the Province 50 years ago with promises that were never met, bringing to today with years of neglect to the detriment of our Town. Getting some of this land back will be key to carefully planned development that will yield major revenues to support our tax base.
As long as they don't cause destruction of the dunes, wildlife habitat I am 100% behind this plan.
This would require extensive infrastructure improvements to accommodate the increase in people. Residents may not like the idea of this small town becoming crowded year round.
if it works more money for the town never know till you try
things never turn out as they we intended. If more money is going to be made by destroying the fragile environment without a thought to it's importance then that will happen
Excited is an understatement. Everyone wants this to move forward.
Whatever is done in Beach Area 1, it has to support the vision of Wasaga being a four-season tourist attraction.
THIS IS WAY OVERDUE. WASAGA STRONG............
We absolutely need these improvements. Acquiring a high school(2!) was pinnacle to our population growth! Thanks!
Parking is at premium at times, and development of all the parking would leave it difficult for day trippers to find parking.
Yes as long as there are places to shop and eat as well. Very excited to see it redeveloped. Hoping it’s gonna have a cool vibe like blue mountain village. The beach is our main attraction but we do need to have more of a resort feel to attract tourists all year round.
The area has been in decline for decades
Q: Provincial Beach Area Two
Provincial Beach Area Two is adjacent to Town Beach Area Two that has been owned by the town for many years. At this time, there are no plans for this area after transfer and de-regulation. It will be included in the Waterfront Master Plan. Do you support the transfer from the Province to the Town?
Provincial Beach Area Two
It's fine to cater to tourists in Beach Area 2 with business development.
The town is in a much better position to create a plan that will be in the best interest of the citizens of Wasaga Beach than the province.
Best part of beach is #2....town will turn it into expensive town homes for tax revenue.
Growth opportunity for Town Beach Area 2.
A perfect area to develop for residential use. Prime location between the beach and the river.
I support the transfer of this area as long as it is kept recreational or tourist based. I do not believe that we need any residential development there, we will have sufficient on the current town owned land.
No condos
No building at Beach 2...picnic areas etc public use
What happened to all the talk and affirmation by the town and province that these dunes and wildlife and flora were to be protected ? You can’t do that and build condos at the same time - that’s a lie …
who is going to end up paying for prov beach 2
Absolutely support that approach, and I would even recommend that the Town be transferred all the other provincial park. They have not been well maintained, and just look at the picnic tables that are falling apart. We can do so much better to improve the image, beach area for all to enjoy. This is a great first step and totally makes sense to expand the beach one area to be managed by the municipality.
My concerns here is that the family BBQ areas and parking would be the responsibility of who Wasaga Beach???
If this is the forested picnic area I would hope that this would remain. I would not want to see it being developed as hotels or big residential homes.
The province has let areas fall into disrepair. As I said earlier I’m all about nature so I don’t want to see a concrete jungle.
The short term plan is known. The long term plan of this property is the issue of concern. Trees, grass, walkways, and picnic areas are great. Adding anything else to take away from this scene would be almost criminal. People need a place to relax and enjoy time with Families, even if its a small property.
Transferring the land means transferring the maintenance cost from to Province to the Town
No because I don’t think the town has the best interests of the town in the plan.
The town cannot afford to manage it, and have demonstrated they have little regard for environmental protections.
Leave this area parkland. Beautiful old pines, gorgeous greenspace. Develop on the other side of the river. Leave this area alone. You can never go back!! The town will be cash strapped and then sell out to the highest bidder
This development will be pleasing and benefiting only a certain group of people.
I would prefer that area1 be left completely untouched and a reduced area be developed as a tourist friendly destination.
The town likes to sell land to developers. Area 2 contains beautiful mature trees as well as parking. There’s no guarantee this land will never be sold and developed.
was told 50 years ago this was homes and stores.., kick off made in to park.. also call part of the Great Lake Trail. that many Bikes runners.ect..will this still stay>?
I would hope that the beach remains open for locals
Town Beach Two is where we most often park because the Provincial Beach Area Two parking is not as spontaneous with the relatively new pre-registration parking program even though I do have a season Provincial Park Pass. We need to keep as many trees as possible with our warming climate. I would like to see some structures for rent for large family reunions or wedding venues.
No, they will just build condos and residents will lose access to the beach
Again, how to support the UNKNOWN? I love the sheltered trees parkland of Beach 2. What does DEREGULATION mean?
our council should control this, not the province.
It would be a nice treed area for food trucks and picnic tables
Please do not build house deeded to the water!
It is a beautiful beach beach.
Leave it for all to enjoy!
The town has an internal mandate to keep properties pristine, where the province is lacking in effort
It's not the Provinces to give away. Full stop. It belongs to the people. WE should be deciding not politicians or people getting paid on contract to develop master plans.
The town owns it already - no transfer needed. Keep it as parkland.
An integrated plan is necessary for the full waterfront. This important picnic area should be family fun focused.
I fully support the transfer and think that finally that they need to move forward even faster in approving development. We need the jobs since the economy is going to fall apart in the next 6 months.
All people of Ontario and around the world should have easy access to all of Wasaga beachfront
Once the mayor (who does not live in Wasaga) gets his hands on this property it will become an extension of Beach 1 development. His “pie in the sky” dreams are not those of Wasaga Beach. They will benefit a few financially and hurt the environmental integrity of the beach.
I am strongly against cutting down trees to build housing. I kinda love the beach the way it is, on either side of the strip.
We will have to wait and see what the Waterfront Master Plan decides what to do with it.
This all smacks of pockets being lined,
Would like to ensure the environmental protection of land and beach and not see it developed.
Transfer of the beach? I don't think it should be transferred to the town. Why would we want to take responsibility for that?
let the province keep ownership it is a great area just the way it is. Don't think the town has the money to maintaine it. Look after what is already owned by the town,
Leave it inthe hands of the provincial government I don't trust this council
It would be better to include all the land into one plan, that way all the areas would work towards one common solution.
Locals are better positioned to decide what to do with the land in the Towns interest than bureaucrats in Toronto.
Provincial Beach Area Two is already a well-maintained provincial park. There is no reason to saddle local ratepayers with its upkeep, especially when there is no guarantee the land won’t one day be sold to private developers.
This area has always been beautiful and accessible. I would be remiss to say that we are not concerned about commercial interests potentially taking over and ruining this area which has contributed to the overall beauty of Wasaga Beach
How much is it going to cost taxpayers to take over these two beach areas 1 and 2? Both the boardwalks and the bathrooms are very old and will need maintenance at whose expense?
This is one of the last stretches of dunes and forests and need protection. The dunes are currently being destroyed by foot traffic and better protection is needed
The town is financially strapped to provide public services now. Can we afford to add more staff, facilities etc for more beach land?
As long as there are upgrades to the masterplan, ie clean up, restructure parking, NO building of commercial projects. Leave this area clean and protected.
In the hand of the town, they will ruin it and build more commercial areas for revenue and ruin the existing park. Leave it as is and maintain for clean picnic areas and trails
MUST be left as it is! No building leave it natural.
If the town keeps up the maintenance etc then I’m in favour of this change
Provided that the area remains public and accessible to those living out of town.
The province has neglected this park too long. Hopefully the town can spruce it up to a respectable level.
We need continuity. The area needs for the town to plan for the future. Provincial governments are not invested the same way in our town.
as long as no condos or resort built on the land , Beach must be kept open to the public
Let the town look after beach area two….keep it public access ….use for bringing and holding events, for certain events that are now held on near the main beach area.
We need more green space not more development on the beach.
This is where we live. It only makes sense that we have control over our beachfront.
Again this is park land for all. Let's not exclude by making it municipal and end up changing to use it to make money.
Somewhat support
Refer to previous comments re Beach area 1. Also we need transparency re this master Plan.
Hopefully no sellout to Developers.
"Use the derelict land surrounding the park. Why would Beach 2 be transferred to the Town if the objective was not to develop it? The parkland at Beach 2 is a jewel. It should be hands off.
The town will take good care of the beach. I have found that the province doesn't keep it clean and in good shape.
Beach 2 is already owned in part by the Town and now they will have the rest of it.
Carefully planned development will help support our future so the Town can prosper and finally showcase the World's Longest Freshwater Beach properly.
As long as the Town will provide proper picknick tables and adequate number of waste receptacles and enforce respectful use of that land by visitors. Too much garbage left behind.
not aware of cost to maintain could be a large burden for us tax payers
I support it in theory - But again, the town cannot come to the residents with tax increases to pay for all their plans and dreams. We're living that realty now. 38M sounds like a lot of money, until you start spending it. And monies from the Beach 1 building won't be coming in for several years according to what I've read about the contract. Respect those of us already here.
There are stagnant lands in this area that can be used towards Wasaga Beaches future four seasons development.
We need to control this land at the municipal level to further support our vision of being a world class tourist attraction.
Ontario has not done a good job with the upkeep of the parks. Playground equipment is old and rusty, needs more updated garbage bins etc. I'm hoping the town will improve on that
Now it will all be a part of a Master Plan that the town can control and better plan for.
Beach area two is a huge greenspace well used in summer months by visitors. I do not support commercially developing those lands for anything other than park space with possibly small commercial endeavours ( eg shops, food vendors ) on a small portion of the space.
As long as town the town maintains the beach to needed standards.
Would love to see our main strip become bigger if possible. Would be awesome to have something like a great wolf lodge.
It will be built on in the future.
The province is not looking after it to the standards of a "destination" tourist site and the town should do a better job. I am wary of the wording "at this time".
The area could be amenity based providing activities for residents and visitors
It's fine to cater to tourists in Beach Area 2 with business development.
Q: Environmental Confidence
How confident are you that the town can and will provide protection for the piping plovers, the dunes, and keeping the transferred beaches public in perpetuity?
05 Environmental Confidence
Protecting the dunes must be a high priority because they harbour important species of plants and birds, so they should be off-limits to development.
Hoping this is a priority for the mayor and council.
Don't care...this super sensitive bird requires extreme human care ..caged homes..fencing ...even in perfect care conditions because it nests on the ground & is prey to gulls ..racoons etc. it gets wiped out...even a normal storm off the bay will wipe it out....total waste of time & resources. Give this bird a pass.
I'm on board with protecting our environment and the creatures that we share it with. Beaches are meant to be enjoyed by all, as long as the public is respectful of the Beach where others call home.
One thing that has not been made clear is that our plovers are not the only ones left. These birds are protected, and we should honour that status, but it’s important to remember that they are part of a very large population of similar birds that roost and gather at many other locations.
Not everyone who visits the Beach is respectful of conservation of wildlife and the dunes. Could we have better signage. Similarly, the ice shelves and undertow dangers are ignored by many visitors.
Keep all beaches clean! Remove dead fish & birds & garbage in the fall too.
Once they turn the first shovel over, nothing is off limits. So, question for you: whst are they actually accomplishing by developing these sites ? How is wasaga benefiting from the building of condos, hotels, and retail spaces ? How does the addition of hundreds of new residences, all stacked atop of each other, help the already crowded beach areas, which are already jammed with cars, more pollution, and over loaded traffic as it is. Wasaga can not handle this safely or environmentally …
It's fine to develop the high traffic areas that are serviced by parking lots and washrooms. But it's not fine to develop the sand dune areas. We don't want them developed because they are home to various unique bird species and plants. For example, the dunes at the bottom of 16th street are very precious and should not be developed.
This is an unnecessary initiative.
don't trust town to carry on with protection of plovers
It is not only an objective and vision, but actions are being taken to ensure the protection of the plovers & dune. Keeping the beaches access to the public is a legacy we must keep
Should these birds stop arriving here and in this part of the beach what would be the plan for this area.
Let’s hope that future town councils will be of the same mind as this one.
This council is to interested in building, building, building.
The Town, namely Wasaga Beach taxpayers rather than the Province will be paying for the maintenance of the park land.
Leave the parks with the province!
I don’t believe word they say.
Comments about the inconvenience of the piping plovers blocking beach 1 access by current council members and the towns illegal raking of Allenwood Beach (federally protected as a piping plover breeding ground for ten years) give me NO confidence they care to or have the ability to protect the dunes or any endangered species.
Sure. The vision sounds great. But is it realistic? Slow down!!
It takes a lot of educated people a lot of time and money to currently maintain the park and its natural state, I don't think the town has the money or the knowledge to do that
I also don't see that the town will continue to allow access to the beaches in the same way that currently happens. Prices will increase so it becomes more exclusive
They are already destroying our forest, already not showing any consideration for wildlife.
I don't think the province does a great job now of managing the vulnerable ecosystem. Maybe the town will do better.
The town council won’t reveal what it will cost taxpayers to take over this land and continue protecting plovers as well as they have been.
They can't even keep on top of the current by laws. People parking on lawns, decrepted eyesores if buildings, unkept round abouts. I'm authorized Air BnBs.
I haven't heard what the plan is for keeping them safe
Too much personal agenda and developers w/ deep pockets for their cooperative friends
I am very confident in this counsel especially since they are being as open as possible. I do worry about future councils who may lean more to development or lean further to conservation and waste money on undoing what has been started. For example, our wonderful library for budget constraints did not approve space for heritage archives, K to 12 students & their parking and Friends of the Library. These are now being squeezed in because of original budget constraints.
No , Andrew MacNeil said that there are lots of piping plovers in Florida. So glad that the woman was at the meeting to challenge him. Or actually to make him out to be a liar . Haha , great moment! I firmly believe the residents will lose access to the beach. The environment will suffer if Smith and the rest of the bobble heads stay on Council. I was told they plan to develop
Taxes from private homes would be much more lucrative and THIS council will not always be around.
developers are their rich friends...........always comes down to money.
look how much of the waterfront along the bay is NOT public. we get a path to the beach, then the home owners on the bay think they own all the way to the water !!!
YIKES… how much of the town budget goes into this?
Protecting, and expanding the area the plovers need should be a top priority. Tourism is important, but allowing any development on that beach area shouldn’t be allowed. We won’t have tourism if we destroy what makes this area wild and beautiful.
Unless there's provincial conservation officers now patrolling these areas it makes sense to have them under our jurisdiction. If someone is destroying the area there's no question of who can lay charges etc
Just leave these areas to the Province.
It's obvious to me that these birds don't need protection, when they leave areas like a beach it means the food supply is limited so they leave and nest out on the islands ,as a boater on the bay for many years I've seen them on numerous occasions out there.Leave them alone, don't interfere with nature.
This council has commited to keeping areas as natural as possible without distracting the natural habitat
Allenwood Beach is a clear example of how the Town is doing NOTHING to protect anything. Raking the sand, destroying what is supposed to assist species and roping things off without any signage. People playing volleyball and soccer in the ropes. removing protections is not needed if they want to provide protection for anything. JOKE.
Soon there will be no legal requirement to do so. That means the privatization and sell off of lands will negatively affect the environment.
I have listened and gone to all the meetings. For example, the CAO had extensive experience with shore line developments including serval staff members with extensive experience in managing sensitive shore line. To say otherwise is disingenuous.
Council has never supported protection of the piping plovers. They find them a nuisance
Keeping the beach public can mean many things and I doubt that the natural beauty will be kept. I believe the town lots to add development along the beach with the justification that the town needs tax dollars. I believe that is an excuse to hide behind.
To be honest, I support using this minuscule space for people rather than worrying about birds.
Better be just as good or better, or there will be hell to pay! We MUST protect our environment!
Hopefully they will protect the piping plovers which are endangered.
No confidence in this council! Complete lack of transparency. Only ask for input after all plans and deals made.
Municipal leaders seem to protect their own interests. (Bifolci period) Worried that if a new mayor comes in that they wouldn't necessarily see the long term issues. Need to have protections in place to prevent private interests/greed taking over discussions and decisions.
They will become a rare sighting.
I don't think the council really cares about nature or the plovers. There has been so much clear cutting done and nothing is being built. Some of the potential plans shared on facebook don't have anything to do with conserving or protecting nature and natural habitats.
Leave it in the hands of the provincial government
I am so tired about everyone saying that the town wouldn't care!! The town is closer to the the sensitive areas and will do a better job than the province.
Tell the Petition People to get the facts on this issue before signing up to protest.
I am aware that the Mayor is not a fan of the plovers and how their habitat restricts some tourism. I also understand the Endangered Species Act so hope that he won't push an agenda that doesn't protect them.
There is no guarantee this land will remain publicly owned—Council could sell it to private interests at any time. The Mayor’s vision is vague and lacks detail, offering no real plan. Before committing taxpayers’ money, there must be a clear, transparent proposal and genuine public consultation.
The town's ability to follow through on habitat protection is yet to be seen. Action and follow-through will build public confidence
I trust that the town, under the current council, will do what they have said they will do. They seem to agree that the dunes and piping plovers are important aspects of the beach to be saved and protected.
There is no legal protection to assure any of these things and no form of recourse if they violate promises.
Everyone is aware of the importance in protecting our wildlife and various habitats. I believe Mayor Smith is on the same page. It also would not make sense to privatize certain areas of the beach and limit the people who can use it.
I don’t trust the intentions of Doug Ford. I feel we are opening Pandora’s box by allowing him to revise the laws about parkland remaining public property. I’m sure Ford will use Wasaga Beach rezoning as an opportunity to commercialize and possibly sell off other beautiful public parks. He is unscrupulous and can’t be trusted to work for public gain unless he can involve construction and development that perhaps he gets personal gain from.
Why do we have to close down so much of the beach area for 3 or 4 birds.
We have an incredible town council who are hard working, honest and reliable to protect our heritage and eco-system. Having the Town being the "caretakers" will result in close contact on all aspects of our beautiful beaches.
I believe this is part of the vision and plan for our town's reputation. It would make sense though to have a piece of legislation in place that would support and protect this vision in years/generations to come.
The council’s vision is tax money. They speak of protection of wildlife and have no experience in these issues and need to Listen to the educated people whose job is to stop this continual insult of developing on protected areas Start and finish at Main Beach current commercial area. Leave the other beaches as is.
I’m on New Wasaga/Allenwood beach and have watched Ministry of Natural Resources employees constantly ignore their responsibilities. Just driving around in expensive taxpayer funded pickup trucks, parking for 15 minutes at a time to be on their cellphone, rarely exiting the vehicle to look for or pick up trash etc. The people that walk dogs on these beaches are the people picking up the trash, and the Ministry tries to ticket them for walking their dogs.
Just move the plovers to another location! Enough already with these birds!
As long as this town votes in a responsible council every four years I am confident what needs to be protected will be.
The truth for me is..don’t fight Mother Nature. The plovers will find a quieter beach to nest. Wasaga beach is not quiet. Too much money and time is spent pretending we are eco friendly to birds that have their own agenda. Be eco friendly in other ways that will make a bigger impact.
This is what makes Wasaga Beach the “beach”.
by taking over these parks what will happen to our already to high taxes
I dont think large areas of accessible public beach should be closed for maybe a few birds.
What will development do to the overall area for the plovers?
I'm only confident that this current council will be responsible. If something can be put in place so that future councils cannot undo the protection of these natural habitats that is the only way forward
It's expensive and the town couldn't afford its care so the province took over. How can the town afford the cost now without selling off some the park.
Brian Smith may mean well but he will not always be mayor
Somewhat confident
The Town cannot afford the upkeep of the Parks in question. Plus the Town cannot afford the infrastructure necessary for this without further burdening the Taxpayers of Wasaga Beach.
Councils come and go, so Smith's intentions are irrelevant. I am against slicing off and privatized ANY amount of provincial park land.
I truly believe that the town would never build or make the beaches private! I think they will improve and keep it clean!
Not only Plovers but also the threatened snake found in Wasaga Beach is the Eastern Hog-nosed Snake ( Heterodon platirhinos ). This non-venomous snake is protected under Ontario's Endangered Species Act, 2007 and the federal Species at Risk Act, and is threatened by habitat loss, fragmentation, and increased human activity, particularly around Wasaga Beach Provincial Park. The idea of an adventure style attraction in the Park is a wonderful idea. The threats to disrupting wildlife like like Deer, fox, Coyotes, Fishers, Porcupine and many other bird species including Owls and other Raptors. How to mitigate this Rick’s is a challenge and we would have to be very creative on how we work around reducing disruptions to their habitat.
There's a lot of so called environmentalists putting out ridiculous misinformation on social media. Most don't even reside in our area or care about our Town.
Some of these people are anti-Ford, anti-progress, anti-anything and seem to thrive on garbage-speak.
I believe this Administration will do the right things over time and factor in the local public comments.
Future councils may have different priorities
lots can happen before end of the project he says he plans for natures concerns but money can change that real quick
If money is to be made, the dunes, birds, wildlife will be sacrificed.
No perceived issues
I am not so convinced that the Piping Plovers will be as protected as we would like. As far as the beaches remaining public, that is a must and I am confident that will happen.
WHY WOULD ANYONE THINK OTHERWISE.
Mayor Smith has made all plans very clear.. the beach and birds will remain safe and unharmed.
Am fairly confident with current council but need to write bylaws and provincial / federal laws to keep it in perpetuity
Community support 0f the plovers has all ways been strong, and I don't expect this to change.
I believe the town will protect the plovers but I also think we need to update some of these areas for tourism as well as for us.
Councils change through the voting process. There is no guarantee that future municipal governments won't have a change of direction.
The province has been neglectful, with very little interest
Protecting the dunes must be a high priority because they harbour important species of plants and birds, so they should be off-limits to development.
Q: Destination Wasaga
The Ontario government is investing $25 million to support the redevelopment of Nancy Island Historic Site, along with the proposed transfer of administrative responsibility for the site from the Ministry of the Environment, Conservation and Parks to the Ministry of Tourism, Culture and Gaming (MTCG). Do you support this development?
Destination Wasaga
It's surprising how many people in this town and local area have never visited this historic gem!
The degraded condition of Nancy Island is embarrassing and very disrespectful for an area that played a huge role in the war of 1812. It should be celebrated and honoured. I am hopeful this investment will do this and then it must be properly funded to keep it pristine.
What a 'money pit'...government will do a great job running it.
Bring our history back to life for all to enjoy. It's a crying shame what has happened to this historic site.
Bring back the re-enactors, this location should be a source of national pride for us. It’s a perfect time in our history to focus on events which occurred here !
I'm unsure as to whether it will truly be a tourist destination due to limited interest and hence unsure there will be a significant ROI on the capital investment of $25m.
It is part of our heritage and should be refurbished to help educate visitors of our past history
Most of the money spent on Nancy Island?? Not seeing that
I think the province should run it as as provincial attraction once redevelop.
The ministry of “gaming.? Come on, seriously ?
Obviously something needed to be done. It is shameful to have let this historic site unmanaged, and not maintained for so long.
It should move in that direction
Important to get the funds needed to help bring Nancy Island back .
The Nancy needs some refurbishing for sure. It needs some new ideas to encourage more Tourists and Locals to visit. There will be so many new things happening in that area that will make Nancy obsolete if not redeveloped properly.
Don’t know enough about what they purpose but I can’t see it becoming a big draw
The island definitely needs help, its run down and miserable but its an amazing site that should be something people flock to see. If the MTCG can support it while keeping its dignity, then absolutely. Its obvious that the parks have not be able to afford the upgrades it needs.
Our rare history has been overlooked for too long. Ensure you include indigenous history as well. Our waterways have a magnificent history
Support redevelopment but not by tourism and gaming
I would like to see it redeveloped, but protected. Changing ministries from environmental, conservation and parks to tourism and gaming screams overdevelopment. Turning it from a historic sight to theme park.
Promote historical sites.
Nancy Island is part of our heritage and should be preserved.
As long as it doesn't fall in the hands of the Town, all good.
Fund and improve
A country that forgets its history and ignores it is doomed to failure. This Island represents the strong heritage that united Canada and made us the nation that we are. It must be preserved and upgraded, made attractive to families with Sound and Light productions and promote the gallant history of the men who served in HMS Nancy.
Does this really need any further justification.
Again I am suspicious of the interest of the Ford government in this pursuit.
I thought i saw visitors entering it..I didnt realize it was open to the public.
About time for the province to support Wasaga as a tourist destination in addition to all-year living
I love history! Not the most exciting museum, but still pretty cool! Update, modernize, refurbish, advertise etc!
Yes for sure. It needs a great deal of work because it hasn’t been maintained. Hopefully Huronia Historical Parks will do a great job of redeveloping it and run it properly. It is an historical site and needs to be treated as such.
This is not a tourist attraction. Does not draw enough people to cover the costs.
I don't know anything about Nancy Island or what is involved in its administration.
Currently it’s an eyesore and run down.
Why didn't the town look after this before it got to such a state of disrepair? If the Province is giving money to fix it up, why do we need to take administrative responsibility? Who let it get to this state of disrepair?
Concerned about the town is going to use this land for further commercial interests.
I think this will be a good, educational addition to the four season destination package.
This historic site should be developed and open to the public. This place could also hold special events the same way Black Creek Pioneer Village does.
The Ministry of Environment is a joke. They have done nothing to respect the history of Nancy Island other than let it rot.
Perhaps MTCG can get a fire lit and bring back this site to where it should be, this disaster would never happen in TO.......
This would seem to align with the goals of historical/cultural stewardship and support tourist attraction
It’s great to see that Nancy Island is being rejuvenated. It was saved just in time. No one wants a repeat of the Ontario Science Centre debacle where successive provincial governments let it deteriorate to the point where it had to be torn down
Na not Island is a great tourist attraction and could also be a learning centre for the public on beach protection and a potential conference hall for visiting businesses.
No transfer of power needs to occur, that only raises unnecessary costs.
What a waste of taxpayer dollars dollars! Took visitors there many times and it’s really bad! I honestly would love to see it all gone! Or move it elsewhere…. Turn it into restaurant on the water, it would better suited for tourists and locals alike.
I am not interested in growing tourism in Wasaga. I am concerned with the return on investment from my provincial tax dollars as to whether or not this projects is deemed worthy. Will a new bronze plaque convey the same message to future generations?
Any important historical tourist attraction that can add to the education of our population is worth every penny spent.
I stand behind redevelopment of a piece of Canadian history.
If being transferred it should NOT be turned into a casino. The govt. seems to want to turn everything into possible casinos.
is there a lot of people that visit the site because if not i think the money could be better spent elsewhere
depends what is done with the site. Town docks for transient boaters and day trip visitors, like there used to be, would be great at nancy island
Don't turn it into a gaming location.
$25 million??? How will this boost tourism?? and Year-round visits???
Take care of this historical gem. The province can afford this kind of expense but the town could not. So why are you happy to leave this with the province but not the parks. I think you see no potential in selling for municipal profit unlike the parks
Somewhat oppose
Waste of money. I never see any visitors to Nancy Island. I know the historic significance, but a plaque would do.
The area is currently an eyesore
consisting of parking lots and cheap tourist traps promote the idea that Wasaga Beach is a down market destination
ABSOLUTELY ! This is a NATIONAL Historic site & has been handled poorly, not by the Town of W.B., but by the Prov. & Federal Gov'ts.
It seems reasonable for Nancy Island to have the same status as Discover Harbour in Penetanguishene or Ste Marie Among the Hurons in Midland.
I love the fact that Nancy Island will be restored however I do not like the wording of 'redevelopment" as that implies something else could be built there.. I want it to be protected as a historical landmark
Yes, it more needs to be added. Possibly adding some participation by First Nations regarding artifacts and stories of a time before 1812.
This is a massive achievement by our Town Administration and the funding and change of ownership/maintenance will pay huge dividends.
The sad part is that this had to happen, as this key historical site should have received much better attention over the years.
the next generation will have know interest in the history too out dated
It is in ruin and absolutely needs to be fixed but 25M seems like an outrageous amount of money for this. What exactly are you doing. We don't need all the big mature trees taken down and a giant amusement park. There are residents across the river and adjacent to this property who will be forever affected by your plans - what exactly are you spending this money on??
leave it under the control of ministry of environment, conservation and parks. transferring to the other ministry might end up in a Disney-like area, not a cultural and historical area to be preserved. Don't sacrifice our history for a few extra bucks. Once it is gone it is gone!
A great part of our history. I hope the site is used as an educational visit for children and families to learn about our famous contribution to Canada in 1812.
It's a crying shame what has become of Nancy Island, it needs to be returned to it's former glory and do I dare say enhanced.
IT CAN ONLY IMPROVE FROM THE CURRENT STATE.
I know the history of the Nancy ship and strongly support making it a year round location to visit
Nancy Island is in shambles.. very sad to see it. Now it will be properly managed and maintained. Good to have the support of the province!
Long overdue!!
Sad the way the province abandoned Nancy Island
I’m all for change, development and moving forward. Not sure if that huge amount of money to develop Nancy Island will increase tourism? Not sure if next generations have any interest in it.
Money could be better spent elsewhere
It has been neglected too long, good news.
"This is also extremely exciting news for our town. Definitely needs it.
Our beautiful town is growing and so thrilled to see us moving in the right direction with all of these amazing updated developments.
Q: Beach Drive
Beach Drive redesign/rebuild by Arnott Construction. Construction is underway. The project is framed as essential to flood resilience and unlocking private investment. The province invested over $10.9 million to help fund half of the costs of the redevelopment of Beach Drive. Sunray Group and Stonebridge Building Group will fund the remaining costs. Are you satisfied with the progress on this project?
Beach Drive
I hope provisions are being made for keeping that section of the beach very clean. Any chance you could add a boardwalk somewhere?
Hope the work continues and is on time and especially on budget.
Rendition shows stairs down to the beach...is that a joke? Have you people seen what family's haul down to the sand? Hopefully there will be more than two narrow gateways for beach 1
I'm not convinced that a raised boardwalk can really be considered 'solving the sand problem'! The sand isn't the problem.
Looking forward to seeing the finished product, sooner rather than later.
Fabulous!
Time we moved onto the 21st Century.
Great work by mayor and council!
I am really excited about this component of development. It is the first step to the balance of development.
No condo's
Where's the angle parking? The beach protection is useless as wood is being used instead of higher steel pilings. Floods have washed our Pedro's in the past!
So glad it's Arnott Construction. I trust them.
Same as above: wasaga was and is a beach resort town. Any and all of this just adds more cars, garbage, and pollution.
Not sure if right direction for flood resilience
This plan looks really good and the revitalization was much needed. The area looked so tired and tacky. It was not a reflection of what Wasaga Beach could be. Nice to see something finally being done about the area. Well done
I see vehicles I believe this would only cause issues in the future with parking an accessibilty. Is there a means to create emergency service access coupled with handicap access parking only,.
Looking good, so far...Stonebridge is trustworthy
But the jury is still out for Sunray.
I'm curious if any thought was put into using Canadian products and Canadian companies throughout the process. Seems logical with the tariffs.
The BEST idea EVER by raising the road/walkways and the 5' breakwall.
Concerned if the water levels increase there will be no sand beach left. People will be sitting on the boardwalks. This will end it all. Remember not long ago, the water levels increased and flooding occurred. This development wall will stop most of the flooding but thats it. Guess we wait and see...then be regretful if this happens......
Move faster
Hotel should have been started first.
What guarantee do we have they will pay and when do we see the payments from sunray and stonebridge? What proof is there this will cost tax payers of WB $0.00?
I never see anyone working on these roads now that the destruction has happened and the fences are up.
We will for the most part avoid the area and hopefully the provincial areas of the beach will still be left natural.
Where's the parking? Will locals have to pay, will there be municipal parking or just private?
Move faster!!
No, don’t want our taxes going up more. Watched all the mistakes with the TPAL Don’t want to see more costly mistakes
Again, it's hard to be satisfied with a drawing. I guess we have to wait and see.
Accessibility for the disabled seams lacking
Complete and utter waste of money. You will lose to mother nature.
Yes we need to ensure buildings are safe from high water levels. What exactly is the quid pro quo to the private companies for funding this?
Why did the town have to get a $15 million loan? Still owe over $9 million for the purchase. How have town finances gotten so low in less than 3 years.
It is overdue. Accelerate completion.
I am very satisfied. This type of project is quite complex, with various levels of engineering approvals and environmental requirements. Anyone who thinks it should be moving faster has a profound lack of understanding of the requirements of a project like this in a sensitive ecological area.
Have not checked it out
Again why is the provincial government interested in changing the height of a road for private interests. Flood control? Maybe a barrier to protect the proposed area from winter winds that are laden with ice and sand.
I'm impatiently waiting to see it all done. I understand it takes time but we can see progress!
Go faster!!!
It will be good for me as I am handicapped and have to use a walker. The way it is now I can’t walk on the beach as my walker sinks in the sand and it is too difficult. Also every year the stores there are flooded which is an added expense for businesses so this will hopefully eliminate this problem.
Tax payers funding the other half of the costs.
Were is all this money coming from?
I'm undecided. I like the idea of the town finally moving forward but the idea of condo buildings close to the waterfront is discomforting. I don't want to see access to the beaches limited. Would hope that the area doesn't look as run down as the rest of the town 5 years after completion!
All I see is sand. What progress? Unless you mean the ugly buildings across from Pizza Pizza. No, I'm not satisfied with that.
when does the town get Sunray and Stonebridge contribition?
Should have been left alone
Can't wait to see the new Wasaga Beach. Would be a pleasure to have access to a walkway on Beach 1 in winter to look at the ice mounds.
The public won’t benefit from the revamped Beach Drive while the Stonebridge subdivision continues for three more years. Units facing Beach Drive clearly aren’t a priority.
It seems to be progressing well.
As long as there is a barricade of some sort at the west end so headlights do not shine kilometers down the beach.
Great idea to raise the road to prevent flooding.
It's sad to see nature being manipulated, but there you go the deep pockets always win.
It’s a start but, Call in the Dutch on water management. Time will tell with climate change.
Looking forward to seeing it all done
I’m sick of this survey always saying what the government gave us and not telling us how many millions it’s costing taxpayers instead
It was a good idea to raise the road but would have preferred a pedestrian only walkway.
I know I’m in the minority. I don’t support the expenditure of a road near the beach. Make it people friendly and useful.
Change takes time and there is a lot to get done. Rome wasn’t built in a day. So happy that Beach Drive remains and excited to see the end results
I have not viewed the progress.
Where are the parking projections facilities for visiting tourism in this project and all the other projects?
This is needed. But still concerned about over runs and taxes on this project.
We shall see
Flood resilience or flood protected?
Who will pay for the obvious Cost Overuns?
Providing that the work is being monitored by Town staff. Raising of the Beach Front drive is important, providing that there will be a beachfront drive or will it be eliminated to suit the home owners.to avoid traffic noise?
Taxpayers would have been save a lot of money if Beach Drive was never reopened to traffic.
It's a must do and the Town creatively found a way to get this funded by the Province and the developers, which enables the Town to invest in other critical infrastructure needs as we grow.
It's a massive change to our key tourist beachfront area and badly needed.
Would still like to be able to drive on Beach Dr.
no project ever finishes on time must be watched very carefully by toen
Demolition was longer than initially slated. I don't know if this is on target now or not but winter is coming so weather is great now so hopefully they are "getting it done"
We need to start with infrastructure. Excited to stroll this area in a few years time.
Accelerate the project as much as possible.
This makes perfect sense to me
I would suggest ...
1- to ensure safety and convenience, a restriction of vehicles during daylight hours within the downtown area to ensure our downtown is walkable, save for a tourist train to move residents and visitors from designated parking to beachfront and stores.
2- sufficient set-back from the Beach for taller structures.
It’s HAPPENING! At long last! Hooray to our amazing Mayor and Council!! Bravo and thank you for your hard work! Brave leaders, all of you!
Moving ahead slowly, because of Dewatering have to be done, to get infrastructure in the ground.
Very happy to see that it’s already moving forward and has started.
Glad to see there will be a break wall to protect any flooding as we have seen in the past.
Mother nature will over come engineering.
Q: Sunray Group
Sunray Group will invest over $45 million to build a 150-room boutique-style Marriott hotel. It will include commercial shops and residences balanced with family-friendly public spaces. They will pay full development charges for all four phases of the project. The company will also invest $1.5 million to design and build a “Festival Square” next to the hotel, near the beachfront, which will be used by the municipality for outdoor entertainment and special events. Construction is set to begin in 2026. Do you support the plan?
Sunray Group
It's impossible to have a beachfront redevelopment plan that everyone will like. The fact is though, the now demolished buildings were an eyesore and badly neglected.
Thanks to the Town purchasing these buildings during Mayor Smith's previous Term in 2014-2018 the investment is paying off, despite us losing 4 years of progress in 2018-2022.
Patience is needed as the new development takes shape over the next few years....but it will be well worth it in securing a prosperous future for our Town.
Do not like the design of the hotel for a beachfront . It is cold and austere.
They should pay market value for the land and NOT be given millions in future tax breaks…. The council negotiated a very one sided deal that will cost tax payers millions.
I’ll wait and see.
Let's wait and see
not sure
Let's wait and see
More Transparency
Concerned with increased road traffic
I question who will be able to afford this hotel and why they would choose to come here if they have that much disposable income.
Will only be for the rich
need more info, construction should be closely monitored to make sure no changes take place without public consultation
Yes if beach stays public
Some concern
I think the hotel should be closer to the Wasaga Stars Arena, or another one should be built by the arena.
Four season destinations will attract tourists, hopefully primarily families. They'll need somewhere to stay.
Ugly design. Where are the balconies facing the water?
A world class hotel and shopping aand events area will make Wasaga Beach a world class attraction and help showcase all of the natural beauty of the region.
BUT...watch out for the hotel dictating access control over the entire beach area.
So excited about this project bring on the vibrant beach front with lots of activity, stores, restaurants and bars.
This is the project we have needed for a few decades. “ Build it and they will come” is real!
Some will remember councillors of the day arguing that the Y would be a burden on the tax payers, same with the local transit, the new library, and the Walmart. The bus is busy moving those folks who are on their way to work at Walmart, and try to find a parking spot any weekday morning at the Y…
I am looking forward to an appealing beach front space that attracts both tourist dollars and residents to use the facilities. I look forward to having a destination for local cyclists and walkers to "meet for a coffee or drinks" and enjoy the beachside views.
As long as there is enough parking for residents.
Concerned about the plan for Residential? What is that? Hotel yes, residential, No!
Festival square as soon as possible. Wasaga residents to perhaps have access to their pool facilities.
See above concerns - and good luck attracting clients during a wasaga winter
It looks like a penitentiary.
I hope it actually happens this time!!!!!!!!
How about an indoor water park next to the hotel to attract families and to use year round. The old water slide was great fun and attracted lots of families
This is simply put GREAT. This will proving a for Year Round resort to will attract more visitors 12 months of the year, which is very much needed. It will also bring diversity to the type of tourisms that it will bring and very welcomed and needed.
Like anything in Ontario winter is always the issue with year round accessibility “destination Wasaga “
I don’t think a Marriott hotel fits in with Wasaga Beach. I would prefer to see more interesting architecture similar to what was there previously….like an inn or a lodge.
"As long as there’s natural elements with trees and shade from the sun.
I feel WB needs to do something original to draw people .
While in Puerto Vallarta we noticed how they tiled seats and reached out to businesses to support it and to create. Schools take part, organisations etc.
add benches and so on around town.
To attract more hockey tournaments winter & summer, from personal experience, I think that an indoor pool with a massive slide would be beneficial to the Marriott, to attract winter guests. A thought
This Hotel etc will bring Tourist to town but will do nothing for the People except provide tax income. Last thing wanted is to not become another Blue Mountain Village Resort. They dont need a beach there, we do. Tread softly as people come here for the sand, sun and Beach atmosphere. Paving so much may not be the best method to do this. Sure the Public will come the first year or two to see whats new but after that, everyone will know if this was a wise choice or not. No one has that crystal ball. We hope for the best.......after all we are Wasasga Beach.
This is the first time i have drove over the main bridge and thought, look at the beautiful water. With these buildings all will be blocked off. What a shame. With the buildings torn down the waterfront looks beautiful, why do we need condos and stores. WE DONT
Something has to happen here.. the old wasaga was so run down..we have to gone with the times. Things change.
We need venues that serve the community - allowing for everything from weddings to hockey tournaments to music festivals. Ensure that there is community space as well for the local residents to use at lower rates.
Once that hotel goes up it won’t be the “beach” anymore and is that the start of what else is going on the beach
The hotel developer should pay market value for the land and NOT be given millions in future tax breaks…. The council negotiated a very one sided deal that will cost tax payers millions. The $1.5 million for a market square is less than the tax breaks!
I'm concerned that all these beachfront commercial units will remain vacant. What business can survive 8 off season months?????
Concern about how the rooms will be filled during winter months when tourism declines
I want the main end to be family friendly
I love boardwalks and all the fun odd stores and entertainment that comes with them. Hot dogs, pretzels, fairground rides, amusement arcades, souvenir shops, ice cream, candy shops. PLEASE make it fun, not fancy or exclusive but also not cannabis, tattoos and skimpy bikinis.
Leave this as a beach .... I guess I do not trust the people in charge.
This is consuming parking lots that visitors use. Can we afford to lose visitors? Shuttle buses from distant lots are not the answer. People will vote with their feet and visit elsewhere.
They style of the hotel does not suit the landscape. It looks cheap and will date itself in 10 years. I'm afraid the hotel will take over a section of the beach for private access.
Not sure
Roof top restaurant for everyone would be amazing.
Not a good deal for the town. Not good negotiating
total public beach access. No private beach for the hotel. where is everyone going to park ? is the hotel providing their own multilevel parking garage ?
The development is a great idea, but why can’t it be as environmentally friendly. Living green(plant) roof for water filtration, solar powered? A roof top cafe for sunset views? Even small balconies to make it more inviting.
Where will residents and visitors park?
Out with the old,in with the new.
The town needs a hotel to help further the four season approach as well as to help support the new arena/library.
This is an eyesore and any development should have been south of the bridge. Leave the sandbar to parkland and open space. Ugly clutter.
Too much of a tax break was given.
Too much corporate growth not enough small family business. Big companies pay poorly with no livable wage.
With the delayed structure allowing payment only in completion, Sunray needs to contribute NOW to something for the community
I fully support this plan… see all of the above.
Very poor agreement in that town does not have money upfront. What happens when hotel shutters due to lack of sales. Another white elephant for the town.
The Sunray group is a massive international group and I do not see them stopping with the proposed development on Beach 1. Also the word “residences” is misleading. They are condos. When the trailer selling units opens the parking lots will be full of luxury vehicles waiting to grab up properties. There are most likely commitments already to some individuals.
Can't wait to see it all come together.
Good restaurants are sorely lacking in this town! And year round access is great, but we all know how inhospitable it can be down there in February. Hope the plan accommodates the weather year round!
Yes we really need to do this to revitalize Wasaga Beach and encourage more tourism. We went to the meeting to hear about it from everyone and it sounds great as long as there is still beach access for everyone.
This council bulldozes these plans through without enough public input.
If will be a money pit. Hotel on the beach will be a disaster in the winter.
While I understand the need for the town to expand and move into the future I don't like the idea of having condo buildings front the beach areas. The beaches should be accessible to everyone. That being said it is better than what has been there for the past 10+ years. It is hard to understand how the town has not been able to create an attractive tourist spot in such beautiful surroundings. Greed and narrow vision of past governments.
Does it have to be so ugly? This looks like it fits in somewhere in Mississauga. What happened to our iconic jewel of a beach front? Nothing about this says "beach" or "nostalgia". It looks like it belongs on any street in any city.
Hate the way this whole project has happened This mayor and council have done a terrible job
Oh I can't wait for the hotel to be build. I am so happy that construction is going forward. Congratulations!!
Beachfront needed to be revitalized to attract more businesses and more tourists.
Finally, a great idea for the beachfront.
The design of the hotel is critical. It has to have a unique “beachy” look.
We do need accommodations for visitors, just not sure a massive building will fit into the landscape aesthetically speaking. The park is a must, and the beach protected from over use.
Can't wait.
I support the plan but am concerned that this development is not really going to happen. More needs to be done to reassure people that this plan is really going to happen
Support it but all these high rise buildings affect the view of the beach from MainSt. and will devalue property on riverside. Pity.
The plans are already complete. It’s already a done deal so who are you kidding!
As long as they are low-rise units.
Neutral on this so far.
I think it’s long overdue for this area. But will it be sustainable during the dead winter months? I hope it will be a great success.
It’s costing the town way too much money and you got a builder who’s never built a hotel before to build it
This Hotel can allow local residents to invite larger groups of family and friends to visit, year round, when they don't have enough sleeping accommodations at home.
Can we use the money from the sale of these lands to build a stylish multi level parking garage?
We need to see forward motion. Get at it! Yippee
the new hotel will change the ambiance of the original beach. The beach residents must have a guarantee that the beach will not become a private beach from the hotel and condos
So looking forward to this redevelopment of the main beach area.
i support it but what will happen to the shops in the winter will they be closed until summer like they are now
The beach area will not be recognizable.
Sales of the land was to low so the town square might make up for this bargain. Time will tell.
This is a 2 to 3 season resort area,
Yes
I like the idea but if the majority of residences rent out their space then it may end up being very run down. Many owners may use as an investment rather than a place to live.
Will the Hotel be paying current Market Value for the land? Are they subject to taxes immediately?
Hopefully the hotel owners will have retail on the lowest floor to save beachgoers from needing to leave their spots in order to purchase food & other needs.
I support 150% this plan! I hope they build an indoor feature like a waterpark. With the new arena I can see this grow to a year round destination for sporting tournaments. Hockey tournaments, figure skating competitions, Lacrosse tournaments etc. we cannot host these at present as we have no place to accommodate families.
I support the plan but think the Town should push Marriott for iconic architecture. The cookie cutter suburban design is too bland for the longest freshwater beach in the world.
Wasaga Beach badly needs a real hotel and festival square!
beach need a change this could be a very good attraction for out of town people
100 percent. Super excited that we are starting with a world class hotel. This will bring other developments and progress transforming us to a four season destination.
Very excited for the restaurants, bars, and stores that will accompany the hotel.
GET THE SHOVELS IN THE GROUND....I AM 89 AND HOPE THAT I CAN BE AROUND TO SEE THE FINISHED PRODUCT......
Long overdue!
How fortunate we are to have the Sunray Group interested and investing.
I have suggested for years that half decent hotel with convention and restaurants, would bring tourists year round to our area, the problem has been finding a company to invest time and money.
I personally think this might be the most important piece of redevelopment.
Extremely excited for this. It will bring so many jobs to town as well help bring more tourists to town year round.
Loved that they are building and event square.
So hoping for some good stores down there.
Beach front should be open. A festival square as to open access?
Do not want future councils to allow building high-rise units at the beach front
We need this this hotel and festival square to revitalize the beach front and Wasaga Beach as a Destination.
Q: Stonebridge
Stonebridge mixed-use plan: over $14M land purchase, 150+ homes, 31 commercial units, phased over ~3 years. The project will include open spaces, a public park and a focus on live-work town homes with ground floor commercial space. Phase 1 construction is underway. It includes 18 residential units and five commercial units. Stonebridge paid for the costs of demolition. Do you support this development?
Stonebridge
Just curious what kind of businesses will be filling up all these commercial spaces. For certain people with housing challenges won't be living in them. But, necessary for a four season destination.
Good for the tax base and adding homes for purchase.
Parking will be a major issue with high costs & restricted spots...Collingwood has the same type units..narrow streets & no street parking of any kind.Beach folks will get forced out of the area.Only parking at the hotel will be guests.
We have too many houses for sale in the area and residential development at this time. We require SUSTAINABLE GROWTH PLAN rather than speed and mass deforestation.
Just be mindful of making this area overly congested.
Stonebridge is a beautiful and practical addition to our community.
The beach front development will be just as tasteful and beautiful.
Our town is on the rise!!
Pause to take a look and enjoy the beautiful steetscape next time drive along River Road.
It’s happening everywhere!
This is going to be a fabulous spot of activity on Beach 1!
Too much housing. We're a beach community!
It's hard to imagine where 150 homes will be. Very glad Stonebridge is a partner; I trust Mark Crowe!
Again, another tax grab - that’s all any of this is
Lots of tax revenue coming in from these.
I do not believe they will be able to fill 30 commercial units. Just look around town.
Absolutely. Beach one has been in disarray for too long. It looked tired and certainly were not make very good use of prime land. This will help the community and will welcome a new area to discover.
The location that it is currently in , is a good location my issue would be is hopefully the only access to this area is walking with an emergency service access.
If possible...make the overall exterior, in each section, different than each other...another thought. Don't do cookie cutters
I am concerned about the massive development of Homes in this area. Businesses are nice but only pay minimum wage. How will locals with Families afford to live here....its not that the taxes are dropping. The infrastructure will eventually collapse if we build too much. Wasaga Beach only has one main road, Mosley/River Road West running end to end in Wasaga Beach. Sunnidale Road area is being quickly developed with inferior construction Townhomes. The roadways will become a nightmare. Too much too quick....whats the rush?
I thought the hotel was to be built first. I knew this would not happen. Bad start.
It's too late to ask. It seems to be no coincidence that construction began before public consultations. The town homes lack character.
I don’t think wasaga can handle all the people who live here. Too much density and loss of trees and environmental spaces. Too many people without the infrastructure.
Our beachfront deserves so much more than private town homes!
Again. What commercial businesses will occupy these units? Was there ever a study done to show interest? How affordable will it be???
Again, leave this as a beach ... only very rich will but these as summer cottages while the view from the road is obliterated.
Where are the owners of these places going to work? Commute? Means road development, traffic, more malls?
This is very high density housing. Will residents have to drive for groceries?
it feels sketchy.
No condos on the beach. Don’t see the stores being successful.
parking ?
I would not like to see these townhomes become short term rentals.
Opposed to townhouses at the main beach taking up our parking lot.
The developments would create year round people present all the time, not just in the summertime
Ugly, cheaply constructed and at 3 stories it blocks views. What open space? It's cluttered now. Perfect way to ruin a beachfront. Congrats.
The pay as they close offer is too generous. No incentive to rebuild properties. Stonebridge should have bought properties immediately so that there was incentive to recoup costs immediately.
How much “public space” who will maintain it. How can the public access it?
Stonebridge won't be paying the $14 million until condos are built, sold & ONLY on closing. There should be a definite payment terms & dates.
The Stonebridge proposal is excellent. According to the plans the concept of live work is the perfect way to go. The developer made a point that they want these to be for full time residential, not short term. That is important because they want to create a residential core to support the beach front businesses. So the space is supported by both local residents and tourism. A perfect mix.
Too dense for the area. Limits
Seasonal Parking and access to the beachfront.
I do not have enough information on this plan.
Would have preferred this not to be built.
Yes, cant wait to see and benefit from the business in that area.
vis a vis, will it encroach on the forested areas to the west of the strip? In my opinion, that whole area - Spruce, Beach, 3rd, Mosley, and even between Mosley & the River (except Pedro’s, leave that alone! ????) can be developed! All of it! Just leave the beach as the beach…! (East and west of the strip.)
It looks good and will make the beach look more attractive once it is finished. Just wondering about the pricing. They may be too pricey for many local people to afford.
Another development pushed through, again with very little consultation with the tax payers. Friends helping friends.
More ugly residential buildings in a place they don't belong.
will ruin the waterfront some shops and no more condos
Terrible idea
Fantastic plan. It will mean that there will be foot traffic year round by the residents and with the hotel open year round the area will be useful for a change.
This project began without meaningful public consultation, and the plan hasn’t even been published on the Town’s website. It seems like just another townhouse subdivision with no public beach parking, poorly integrated with the Downtown Development Plan, and a three-year developement timeline.
I like the plans but how do you ensure that the homes don’t become rental units with lots of turnover and limited maintenance leading to not very attractive homes.
With the stipulation they use eco friendly paving and dune landscape plants. No lawns! Also assure they do not get bought out by speculators, air bnb hosts and used for seasonal rental units. This would negate the plans for year round neighborhood
I’m not really happy with the look of the Stonebridge condos. The outside design is too similar to the other new Stonebridge developments. It doesn’t have a “beachy” look. Not enough imagination in the design.
This project has already begun. It will take some getting used to.
They are cheaply built, and definitely not unique. The stamp of Stonebridge is an unimaginative low quality structure. It pairs the “ Walmart” look. They will deteriorate over time. I have watched the construction. Not quality and unique for a beach side building. Poor design.
I’m all for development but am concerned about the quality of homes being built by this builder since I already have one of their homes and it’s of poor quality and workmanship as me and several others on my neighbourhood have come to realize.
The town is building too many homes, trying to grow too fast, the infrastructure can’t support it
Thank goodness Stonebridge Development was chosen.
You need to take a hard look at short term rentals! This property might turn into a big problem. It is not a housing-plus for the present taxpayer. I like the idea and the concept. Once again..get it up, get it finished. Give us something to see that looks good.
We need this to ensure the beach area is sustainable year round and not only a couple of months during the summer. Businesses will thrive with residential there.
The beach must remain public , do not allow this to become a private beach for the wealthy . It will destroy our economy and the beach that we all love.
Again what will it do to congestion.
How can there be 18 res units above the 5 commercial ones?
Slow payment of the $14M tied to home sales. Will be years before we see any money. Keep paying interest on the land.
I have issues with potential overcrowding
Is the Town selling their soul for dollars? Does it matter what we think?
Stonebridge is privately owned, who benefits?
Sale of land based on ?? How much land?
However I'm concerned that the homeowners would have a say on noise by-laws & other area's that would limit the the late enjoyment of the PUBLIC BEACH AREA @ later hours. After all, we are a tourist area, not a street in T.O.
I think they got a very price for this land but we really need them to jumpstart the vision! We need a very strong marketing campaign in the future like Friday Harbour had. Wasaga has it all plus more so we grow to be a better destination than all of our neighbouring communities.
Residential should not be too close to the beach, so that NIMBY residents don't try to dictate what happens on it.
Wasaga is where southern Ontario comes for fun
That should never change.
I would love it if Stonebridge would approach the new Legion in town and donate a building for them or a portion of it. It would be another wonderful investment into our community and our veterans that could have a place that is central to go to.
Not crazy about the look.
I don’t think it will be affordable for most people.
This may not be to everyone's liking but Stonebridge is a quality developer and has contributed significantly to Wasaga Beach.
The residential/commercial mix is critical to improve our tax base from the current 93% residential tax base to ease the burden on homeowners in the future.
proven to be a good company
Not sure how many people will like living above a shop. The homes will become AB&B.
Proven community developer. Has shown a history of commitment with quality products.
Mark Crowe is such a supporter of community life. He has created the very vibrant and convenient community of Stonebridge, so we are fortunate to have him continue to help us beautify our town and help us grow! Many thanks to him!
Finally, unfortunately you can not apiece all residents but at least we are moving forward
Too many of these new homes are being bought up and used as rentals. Renters don’t often care about maintenance of the property. I don’t support all this new housing as it is extreme
I dos support it as long as it will have retail or restaurants as well. Hoping for blue mountain village vibe with lots of shops and restaurants to choose from.
Also have some concerns with all this development, where will parking now be?
Glad that such a quality developer - Stonebridge and long time community supporter was chosen for this development.
BUT...
Where is the commercial units in phase 1?
Stop clear cutting the forests!
Disappointed
Support, but not sure what parcels of land will be developed.
Somewhat
This is not a yes-or-no question, and it seems odd to ask after a decision has already been made.
To late for an much of an opinion
Again it’s a done deal.
Where is this? Is it secret?
Somewhat supportive but 150+ homes is too much
10: Sporadic Provincial Landholding
Sporadic Provincial Landholdings map show the extent of provincial property ownership within the Town. Do you support our town administration in seeking deregulation and sale of these properties so they contribute to our local economy?
Sporadic Provincial Landholdings
Four season destinations will attract homeowners. Can't wait to see the reduction in my taxes.
It is important to leave some areas as green space for the benefit of taxpayers as well as plants and animals.
Redevelopment of these lots will tie in with the rest of the revitalization and add to the value of all properties on addition to helping raise tax revenue.
Do not want to see the beach related areas turned into a condo ghetto & a 4 season year round destination is a 'day dream' by people who have never experienced a day at the beach on any stormy Feb. afternoon.
Just make sure they are sold to the public, who will live and support are community, and not to developers and real estate agents who are only interested in profiting for themselves, with little interest in the development of our Town.
My
If they were sold to developers, I would not want that. Public use for tourist type activities yes, not housing.
I would hope that there would be some guidelines in terms of what the land would be used for and that the design would fit in with the Town's overall vision.
Millions of dollars in tax money - so this is nothing more than a tax grab ?
Do not sell these dune areas to the public. They are valuable sanctuaries for unique bird and plant species. They provide an oasis of calm and quiet that are enjoyed by local taxpayers who come from all around to relax. Local cottage owners wish to preserve these dunes just as they are. There is already a ton of tax money going to the town from other developments and the casino.
Will they stay undeveloped?
I do agree for the town to seeking deregulation. It would be prudent to also share the vision of what those lots would be slated for / zoned for so that the public can support the next phase.
The reason for my disapproval , is this from what I see are acres of trees, wild life and trails which are also used by residents. This area is needed with the growth of the beach , not their destruction or removal which would happen if owned by the township and sold to contractor for housing and taxes. Some things are perfect when left alone why not improve the trails in that area
Put the lots up for sale but regulate the size of the home or homes that are built. Wasaga doesn’t need to turn into mansion city! Let’s retain the small town feel.
Again I would want to protect the green spaces.
These areas provide Buffer Zones and at times public access to the beach sand and water. If these are all sold, they will be developed and public access will be blocked/stopped. Its bad enough to get there now....ie: parking, etc I would hold off for a few years til Beach 1, 2 are completed then re-investigate this option. Is there a need to do this so quickly?
The text implies some land along Shore Lane is the subject of this part of the survey. The map shows a much greater area and is far too small to read. If we're talking about properties basically along the beach that used to belong to the town, yes, let's get them back to the town.
We need all the greenspace we can get
I am not familiar with that area
But the local neighbourhood must have a voice on what gets built. We don't want high-rises blocking views/access to the beach.
And what would the town do with the money from the sale of these properties?
I can't read the map. It's too small.
Too many unanswered questions to pick yes or no
I strongly disagree that the town has the right to sell these lands to anyone other than the original homeowners/small business owners who were forced to move when their land was expropriated.
These lands should be sold back to the families of those homeowners and for them to buy back the their properties for what they were paid 50 years ago!
These are nice little mini parks full of wild grass and nesting birds. Keep them as they are.
With stipulations as to what can be built - not condos if they intrude upon other owners properties. In other words keep it residential.
When I moved to Wasaga, the beach was our biggest reason. However the trails within the PP is now my favourite part of Wasaga. It truly is a haven for rest & regeneration with easy access for so many people. The use during COVID was incredible. Other plus, it is a 4 season wonder especially from The Lookout. This can be a huge draw for visitors with some marketing on Wasaga's part. This is an untapped asset that Wasaga doesn't need to own. There is some work that could enhance the experience with minimal expense to PP. I take umbrage to the tax revenue insinuation like it is waisted land. Think of the businesses that could benefit being close to the park. Great Wolf Lodge located at the old arena! Second location for Scandinave Spa that does hikes on their existing property. Self guided nature hikes. Market these amazing trails as your second day in Wasaga on what to do. Shuttles to all trail heads. Municipal parking at trail heads including buses from TO to Destination Wasaga! Tour buses go to Blue, why not this Park & our beaches.
I strongly disagree with the zip line & gondola in this U Tube proposal which is expensive, hard to staff & noisy(screaming) in the park and adjacent residences. I used to work at Blue Mountain so I know.
IF YOU HAVE NOT BEEN IN THIS PARK IN A WHILE, GET IN THERE.
If you are talking about ALL the green areas on this map, I don't agree. Some areas have become overgrown and security risks. Those areas could be developed without harming Beach use.
sure, but again, ensure guaranteed beach access.
Town map is impossible to read. Individual lots west of beach one could be developed. But woodlots need to be kept wild, or we loose what makes wasaga beach worth living in. And east of beach one should be preserved.
The Lands should have a proper Land use study as to which sites can be used effectively and those that should remain green space.or Parkland .
Develope some sort of plan as to what will be acceptable
Donate them back to the town.
The properties should be sold. The town needs the revenue for the tax base. The sale hopefully would put the properties into private ownership and have better upkeep
Stop borrowing millions of dollars on our backs for dumb stuff like old gas stations. Less spending and borrowing will also contribute to our local economy. As the town grows, locals will contribute to the economy but not if the areas with the town are not maintained. Get the sidewalks in, traffic flow better, clean up and then worry about other lands. First the Town is saying they have surplus lands, now they say they need to buy more. Which is it? Nonsense. Follow the money.
They provide essential greenspace.
Leave the waterfront areas as picnic grounds. Develop the large green areas south of the river as eco tourist attractions, not as housing.
Yes I strongly support this. What members of community do not know is that the provincial government stopped making payments in lieu of property taxes around 10 years ago. They are still not making these payments and the cost is @10 million dollars a year, for a total of 100 million dollars of lost revenue. Imagine if the town had had that 100 million dollars to spend and what it would look like today. This why these changes are necessary.
Town has lots of its own property they have not managed.
This question seems very biased. It makes me question the goal of this survey. The local economy should be fine with the amount of development slated for Wasaga (example the west end of Mosley Street). The town has already shown a propensity for destruction of green space in the pursuit of tax dollars. These properties will be for those who will build large expensive homes or with a plan of further condos.
I don't know enough about this to answer.
Worried it may end up bought with foreign cash or so expensive that only the super rich will buy and then only spend a few weeks a summer there
I'd like to see more detailed map with specific locations and how new developments there would impact the local neighbourhoods
I am against removing nature to build houses! And the only ones who like monster homes on prime lands are the homeowners and the tax collector. Should be for ALL the people!
It depends who they are sold to and what will go on them.
Looks like a loaded question. No I do not support sale... question, where is all the money coming from?
No further development along beachfront.
An obviously biased overtone to this question!
I think the town should consider seeking transfer (or partial transfer) of the large parcel at the end of 68th St for a potential town park (desperately needed in the west end)! Nothing too intensive but it would be nice to have a playground, benches, some walking trails etc there. Could even combine it with some private development of remainder of parcel to enhance finances.
My concern is making sure the beach itself is still accessible to the public and the new landowners understand that they do not own any part of the beach itself.
The map is too small to judge. We need to know exactly what land is involved, its original purpose, and the plan for it before forming any opinion.
Empty land with zero income to the town versus selling lots and bringing more money into the town seems like a no brainer. Sell the lots.
Selling off these lots will mean mass destruction of mature forests and some naturalized dunes on beachfront properties. The town has shown no power over developers or builders to mandate preservation of significant trees and dunes and forbid clearcutting and dune destruction!
I think that the people next to these unused lots should have first right of refusal should they go up for sale.
Water front and areas close to other residential areas should be sold but not the provincial park bordering Blueberry, Golf Course Road and Veterans Way and Klondike. These green spaces are such an asset to our community and emulate the value our residents have for nature close to home. We can’t destroy these.
Get on with it!!. We need the revenue to help with the extreme burden of being taxed to death. The previous council left us in incredible debt with the library/area. It's nice to have them but we need to be able to support on-going infrastructure in order to pay serious debt.
Again. It appears the town is only focused on money. Yes sell them to the public for the building ONLY of residential low rise single family homes. Not condos, commercial buildings or hotels.
With priority given to Shorelane lots, must be a transparent and open process though.
What will happen to Blueberry Trails?
Do we need monster homes or r developers building homes in every area of the beach? No!
Sell lots along Shore Lane however that looks like a big spot of green on the map. I wouldn’t want to see all of that turned into residential….need to keep some forested areas with trails and nature
but will people by them what with the taxes on waterfront properties being so high
Don't take away green space.
I am not in favour of privatizing any beachfront
If the town gets them sold for sure. If left under provincial control sale is not guaranteed. The town will get tax revenue if the province sells if not still nice to have the green space. Lots of land around town that is current available for sale.
Yes
If sold the Town will just develop them into more subdivisions! What’s done is done - we need Green Space!
Residents should have first right of refusal.
Providing that the beach area's are kept in the Provinces hands.
Provincial land holdings are an environmental benefit to the town. Why do we need to commodify everything?
I would be good to sell on an as need basis. The price would be watered down if everything were put up for sale at once. It would be nice to see possible proposals for various lots first.
Will it reduce my property tax?
It was criminal that those lands were ever expropriated in the place. People were cheated out of their family cottages and not given enough money to buy in the area.
There's been a significant loss of tax revenue to our Town for over 50 years and it's time to fix that.
making money is a good thing
For sale with building restrictions
I want Wasaga to stay green and the environment to be looked after but so many properties and areas are run down, overgrown, and unattractive. Clean up and beautify our town. Tax revenue from other sources is critical.
Why not, once again stagnant lands that can be used for tax relief.
Lots should be auctioned off to the public to maximize return and convert the properties to public ownership in an expedient manner. Let's get it done and not have it drag on. Purchased lots need to be built on and not sold to developers to sit on.
THE PROVINCE HAS SHOWN US HOW BADLY THEY HAVE ADMINISTERED THESE PROPERTIES. PUT THEM ON THE MADKET ASAP.
The town needs funds badly as we have virtually no large commercial or industrial businesses here it town, totally unlike Collingwood .
Slow it down. Just because something cam be built doesn't mean it should be. Has anybody even noticed the ridiculous amount of traffic lately?
Common sense!
Lots have been unavailable to several people who have tried to buy several of the lots and would have provided tax base for town.
I personally think this is a wonderful opportunity for the town to be free of the taxes as well as opportunity for buyers and investors.
Its time we cleanup Wasaga Beach and develop the lands so that the town can collect the revenue from these properties.
Support sale of only certain lots, not all of park
MORE DETAILS
Unsure
We need green space and it’s an addition to the beach. Build in these areas? No!!!
Unsure
The original land owners or their descendants whom had those lots expropriated should have first right of refusal IF this option is chosen.
I need more info
Not sure what the direction is for them.
Yes but qualify types of buildings
Sell the lots IF the Town receives a percentage of the Sale Price : the infrastructure required to build will cost the Town and there are no Provincial funds to support so Taxpayers get hit again
Leave the waterfront areas as picnic grounds. Develop the large green areas south of the river as eco tourist attractions, not as housing.
Need more information
Not clear what you’re asking, can’t see the map.
Depends on the lot. Some yes, others should remain protected (though not necessarily as part of the provincial park)
Can't answer this question.
Find land use which benefits both current and future generations, such as long-term care homes, hospice, etc.
Put a few lots up for sale to begin with and study the consequences before moving on.
I don’t feel qualified to answer this question.
To some extent
Reall Not sure ??? I don't believe our current road structure can handle the increased road traffic!
